a US Department of Homeland Security spokesperson described both groups as \u201cbarbaric\u201d criminals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdylj962000a3b6njwegmtlr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo confirmed to CNN on Tuesday that the East African nation had \u201cagreed with the United States to accept up to 250 migrants,\u201d in a deal that allows the government \u201cto approve each individual proposed for resettlement.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdylj962000b3b6nd5pim9sp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When approved, the migrants, she said, \u201cwill be provided with workforce training, health care, and accommodation support to jump start their lives in Rwanda,\u201d allowing them to \u201ccontribute to one of the fastest growing economies in the world over the last decade.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdylj962000d3b6n5ff7hjb9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rwanda, a nation of less than 15 million people, is not new to discussions around third-country deportations to its territory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdynk7mx00123b6na4e3t9ec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It has previously partnered with the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) to temporarily host asylum seekers and refugees evacuated from North African nation Libya, with nearly 3000 arrivals recorded between 2019 and 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/rw\/who-we-help\/evacuees-libya-emergency-transit-mechanism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the UN organization<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdynk9a500143b6ngs1b943u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2022, it reached a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/09\/europe\/rwanda-asylum-uk-starmer-intl-latam\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">controversial migrant deal<\/a> with the United Kingdom to receive deported asylum seekers who arrived illegally in the UK.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdylj962000e3b6n80h0gayn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The deal did not materialize due to legal disputes and was subsequently scrapped after Keir Starmer became prime minister last July. Rwanda suggested at the time that it had no plans to reimburse the more than $300 million it received from the UK for the deportations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdylj962000f3b6nfkrtwt0h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Makolo did not tell CNN how Rwanda stands to benefit from housing US deportees. She also did not disclose whether the US migrants would be kept in the same accommodation that Rwanda had planned to house deported UK asylum seekers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdylj962000g3b6nphg0oq0d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe will provide more details once these have been worked out,\u201d Makolo said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdyly5iv00003b6neyld6d0u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rwanda revealed in May that the nation was in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/05\/africa\/rwanda-talks-to-receive-us-migrants-intl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the early stages of talks <\/a>to receive immigrants deported from the US, according to Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdylj962000h3b6nenwtgoi4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Trump administration has persevered in its attempts to strike agreements with several African countries to accept its unwanted deportees despite outrage from Africans who insist that their continent should not be treated as a \u201cdumping ground\u201d for individuals considered unfit to live in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmdyky5vd00003b6nazw1sp9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In early July, <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2025%2F07%2F03%2Fpolitics%2Fsupreme-court-migrants-djibouti-south-sudan&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cnimi.princewill%40wbdcontractor.com%7C90ab39df77f8402c34c008ddc5359370%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638883556074372087%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=L%2FrlUC%2B7QSti2nYqNreKYY5s%2B2vbrHMhpsRXockYWc8%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the US Supreme Court paved the way<\/a> for the Trump administration to deport certain migrants to countries other than their homeland with little notice.
