There are no age restrictions on claiming or receiving this <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/money\/dwp-benefit-8330-week-you-35492585\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">DWP<\/a> benefit, but those hoping to claim state pension alongside it will face a potentially unexpected <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/money\/dwp-carers-allowance-full-list-34979595\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">issue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It&#8217;s not possible to claim the full amount of state pension and Carer&#8217;s Allowance at the same time. You might be able to keep a portion of your Carer&#8217;s Allowance payments but this will depend on your state pension amount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Your state pension amount is determined by your National Insurance record; you&#8217;ll need 25 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions or credits to claim the full \u00a3230.25 a week from the new state pension.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Cash-laid-out.jpg\" alt=\"Cash laid out\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Whether Carer&#8217;s Allowance payments can continue depends on how much state pension you&#8217;re entitled to(Image: GETTY)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you have fewer qualifying years, your payments will be proportionately reduced. The only situation where you can receive both state pension and Carer&#8217;s Allowance at the same time is if your state pension payments are less than the Carer&#8217;s Allowance rate of \u00a383.30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The caring benefit will then supplement your payment to this amount, according to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.carersuk.org\/help-and-advice\/financial-support\/carer-s-allowance\/carer-s-allowance-your-state-pension-plus-other-benefits\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Carers UK<\/a>. For example, if you receive \u00a370 per week from state pension, you can then get an additional \u00a313.30 from Carer&#8217;s Allowance, totalling \u00a383.30 per week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, if you receive \u00a384 a week from state pension, you won&#8217;t be eligible for any further Carer&#8217;s Allowance payments. Those eligible for Carer&#8217;s Allowance are urged to apply for the benefit even if they won&#8217;t receive any payments due to the state pension rule, as it could unlock access to additional benefits, reductions and support through what&#8217;s called an underlying entitlement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Carers UK explained: &#8220;It is still worth applying as you may be able to get what&#8217;s called an &#8216;underlying entitlement&#8217; to Carer&#8217;s Allowance. This is where it is agreed that you meet the criteria for Carer&#8217;s Allowance, and you will be sent a letter of &#8216;underlying entitlement&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;This tells the benefit agencies that you are still a carer, and because of this it may mean certain benefits you&#8217;re already receiving increase or you may be eligible to receive certain benefits for the first time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Those claiming other means-tested benefits such as Pension Credit will typically become entitled to any relevant Carer Premium or Carer Addition through this underlying entitlement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_Confused-person-on-the-phone.jpg\" alt=\"Confused person on the phone\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Having a letter of underlying entitlement can open the door to other benefits, discounts and support(Image: GETTY)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Obtaining Pension Credit can also unlock eligibility for numerous other benefits and support based on individual circumstances, with full details available on the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pension-credit\/eligibility\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Gov.uk website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Pension Credit entitlements:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Free prescriptions<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Free dental treatment<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Warm Home Discount<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Cold Weather Payment<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Free TV licence if you are over 75<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The underlying entitlement letter can also be used to prove your caring role for things like getting a discount or free entry to leisure attractions.
