{"id":320966,"date":"2025-08-05T22:50:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T22:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/320966\/"},"modified":"2025-08-05T22:50:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T22:50:10","slug":"ion-iliescu-romanias-first-democratic-leader-with-a-divisive-legacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/320966\/","title":{"rendered":"Ion Iliescu: Romania&#8217;s first democratic leader with a divisive legacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Born on 3 March 1930 in the Danube town of Oltenita, Iliescu studied engineering in Moscow, Russia, during the Stalin era, where he became active in Romanian student political circles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">His time in the Soviet Union would later fuel speculation \u2013 never proven \u2013 that he had ties with high-ranking communist figures, including Mikhail Gorbachev.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">After returning to Romania, Iliescu rose rapidly within the Communist Party, holding positions in propaganda and youth policy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But his reformist leanings eventually made him a target for Ceausescu, who marginalised him from the party&#8217;s upper ranks.
