LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – In the midst of a natural disaster not only did Laurel County find strength within the community and first responders, but they found leadership from elected officials. <\/p>\n
On Tuesday, first responders throughout Laurel County dedicated an American flag to the mayor of London, Randall Weddle, to show their appreciation for his dedication and hard work during and after the E-4 tornado. <\/p>\n
Local first responders said the flag had been on the flagpole at the London-Corbin Airport during the tornado and remained there until it was replaced.<\/p>\n
First responders said they believed he showed true leadership by being present during the crises, leading from the front, and inspiring them to improve their city.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor somebody to be out there with us the night of, it just speaks volumes about his character,\u201d said London Police Dept. PIO Hobie Daugherty. \u201cYou know, we cannot say enough good things about him because of the heart that he has for this community and for this city.\u201d<\/p>\n
First responders said rather than sitting behind a desk, Mayor Weddle had his feet on the ground assisting the community any way he could, and for that they are grateful. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe made a difference and it made a difference and inspired the team that he has to push on through the long hours. You know, if this guy comes in and and leads us and he can do this all day, then we can too,\u201d said London Rescue Squad Lieutenant Bryan Johnson. <\/p>\n
Law enforcement officials said the flag represents our nation, but also the resilience of the community. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the very embodiment of that flag. You know, this storm showed you that we\u2019re going to go through adverse times. We\u2019re going to go through some battles and we\u2019re going to be scraped up. We\u2019re going to be marked but we\u2019re going to rise above it,\u201d said Mayor Weddle. <\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t think I was doing much the night of that storm. And you know, I was doing everything that I could untrained… but for them to give that to me. That\u2019s something,\u201d Weddle added. <\/p>\n
Law enforcement officials said both the frame and the plaque were made by first responders, and no city funds were used for the project. <\/p>\n
