Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Tuesday it would be \u201csuperficial\u201d to compare the approaches Canada and Mexico<\/a> have taken to navigating trade negotiations with the United States, given how different their economic relationships with the U.S. are, despite only Canada facing rising tariffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Anand and Finance Minister Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and their ministerial counterparts in Mexico City to talk economic growth, trade and security.<\/p>\n

The two-day trip comes as many Canadians wonder why the U.S. hit Canada on Friday with a 35 per cent tariff on goods not compliant with the Canada-United States-Mexico agreement on trade, known as CUSMA, while Mexico received a 90-day reprieve from threatened higher U.S. levies. The U.S. counts Canada and Mexico among its largest trading partners.<\/p>\n

U.S. President Donald Trump said last week the 90-day period would allow room to negotiate a new trade deal with Mexico \u2014 something Canada is also currently trying to secure.<\/p>\n

Asked if the ministers took away anything from their conversations with Sheinbaum that could help those talks along, Anand suggested the meeting was much more focused on Canada\u2019s relationship with Mexico and \u201cthe desire for a strong North American economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to stress that Canada\u2019s economic relationship with the United States differs significantly from Mexico\u2019s,\u201d she told reporters at a virtual briefing.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo parse out individual elements of one country\u2019s negotiations versus our own is somewhat superficial, because the relationship is so very complex.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to the meeting, Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard suggested he would be speaking with Champagne about about the two countries\u2019 experiences in dealing with U.S. tariffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to know how\u00a0Mexico\u00a0is getting these results,\u201d Ebrard told journalists.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to exchange experiences. They\u2019re paying a 35 per cent tariff, and Mexico isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Champagne added the talks focused on strengthening partnerships with Mexico on energy, artificial intelligence and other areas of cooperation.<\/p>\n

He said the meeting was an example of Canada\u2019s strategy of diversifying its international relationships in the face of unpredictability from the Trump administration, calling it the right strategy for Canadians.<\/p>\n
