We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/francis-ford-coppola-godfather-sequels-b2657809.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Francis Ford Coppola<\/a> has been taken to an Italian hospital for a planned medical procedure, The Independent has learned.<\/p>\n<p>The legendary 86-year-old director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now had been in Calabria to present a screening of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/megalopolis-review-coppola-b2618865.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial latest film Megalopolis.<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/megalopolis-review-coppola-b2618865.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>Coppola, whose <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/eleanor-coppola-death-sofia-francis-ford-b2528165.html\">wife Eleanor died last April at the age of 87<\/a>, recently completed a tour of U.S. theaters where he has been screening Megalopolis in person. <\/p>\n<p>The film, which stars Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, and Shia LaBeouf, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/megalopolis-review-coppola-b2618865.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a futuristic fable that draws parallels between modern day America and the fall of Rome.<\/a> Critics were divided over the movie when it was released last September.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Coppola told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-affiliate=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gq.com%2Fstory%2Ffrancis-ford-coppola-on-fifty-years-of-winemaking&amp;articleId=b2802662&amp;key=9ed4af92937c872e0ab792f0310bab4e\">GQ<\/a> that he preferred to tour the film himself rather than release it on streaming or DVD. Asked why he hadn\u2019t approved a home release, Coppola responded: \u201cBecause the film is still being shown in theaters. I don\u2019t want anyone to own it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2221897058-(1).jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Francis Ford Coppola at Paris Fashion Week in June 2025\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/>Francis Ford Coppola at Paris Fashion Week in June 2025 (Pascal Le Segretain\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cAfter the election, people are selling out screenings of Megalopolis\u2014the way it was intended to be seen. Being that it was so prophetic or prescient to say America is like Rome\u2014it\u2019s going to maybe lose its republic\u2014now people are rushing to see it in theaters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sold out three screenings in Boston recently, in Detroit, and people are really lining up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just like what happened with Apocalypse Now. Apocalypse Now was a big flop, it got terrible reviews, everyone said it was the worst movie ever made. And yet people never stopped going to see it. The same thing is now happening with Megalopolis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/megalopolis-review-coppola-b2618865.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three-star review for The Independent<\/a>, Geoffrey McNab wrote: \u201cMegalopolis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/francis-ford-coppola\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Francis Ford Coppola<\/a>\u2019s self-funded $120m (\u00a394m) epic, certainly isn\u2019t another Godfather or Apocalypse Now, but it\u2019s at least bursting with ideas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe filmmaker spent decades trying to get Megalopolis off the ground. What if it was no good? And what to make of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/megalopolis-francis-ford-coppola-aubrey-plaza-b2545645.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the many claims of chaos on its set<\/a>? Ultimately, this isn\u2019t the car crash it could have been.
