We take a look | News UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEC_261167411-b5c2.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23828725\" alt=\"Pictures of Banksy's murals\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tMany of the paintings, some which have since been removed, are turning a year old (Pictures: PA\/Rex\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Banksy fans were left gripped after a series of animal-themed murals mysteriously appeared across London over a number of days.<\/p>\n<p>The graffiti artworks \u2013 depicting the likes of a <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/05\/new-banksy-artwork-appears-london-21363698\/?ico=mosaic_uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">goat precariously balancing<\/a> on a pillar with rocks falling below it, two elephants are poking their heads out of blocked windows and three monkeys swinging on a bridge \u2013 first cropped up on August 5.<\/p>\n<p>The goat, which appeared on a building in Kew Road, west London, was the first piece to be created. Over the following eight days, a wolf, pelicans, a big cat, a rhino, piranhas and a gorilla were all stenciled on buildings in the capital. While some have since been removed, some of the pieces still remain in the city.<\/p>\n<p>But what was the reason behind <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/10\/banksy-secretive-artist-whose-identity-may-soon-exposed-2-21398073\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the elusive Banksy\u2019s<\/a> spurt of creative talent?<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the covert street artist also added two new pieces to the capital\u2019s streets. <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/29\/banksy-reveals-new-work-featuring-lighthouse-and-mysterious-message-23279754\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One was a lighthouse<\/a>, with the words \u2018I want to be what you saw in me\u2019 written across it.<\/p>\n<p>Another was a little girl holding gold balloons in Clerkenwell Green, Farringdon, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/04\/fresh-new-banksy-artwork-appears-overnight-london-park-22849004\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">painted on top of boarded-up toilets. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEI_217233428-9750.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-21411463\" alt=\"A Banksy enthusiast believes he?s found the ?final? mural in his animal series - at London Zoo. (Picture: Simon Stephenson \/ SWNS)<\/p>\n<p>Paul Gough is an expert on Banksy and is a professor and vice chancellor at the Arts University <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/afc-bournemouth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bournemouth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He previously told <strong>Metro <\/strong>that the mysterious artist\u2019s stretch of artworks could be pointing towards something significant. (Photo by Carl Court\/Getty Images)\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tOn the second day came two elephants reaching out to one another in Chelsea (Picture: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The difference with the artworks in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a> is that Banksy confirmed he had created them almost immediately after Londoners spotted them.<\/p>\n<p>The artist, whose identity has never been officially confirmed, usually waits several weeks or months to confirm that he has created certain pieces, leading to speculation and mock Banksys to appear.<\/p>\n<p>The mountain goat artwork was removed in early 2025, leaving local residents \u2018heartbroken\u2019, while owners of the building<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/02\/08\/travesty-iconic-banksy-piece-stripped-london-building-22521886\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> described it as \u2018essential\u2019. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second piece showed <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/06\/banksy-reveals-another-new-artwork-london-featuring-two-elephants-21371220\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two elephants<\/a> poking their heads out of blocked-out windows on Esther Terrace, Chelsea, west London and the third showed <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/06\/banksy-reveals-another-new-artwork-london-featuring-two-elephants-21371220\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three monkeys<\/a> swinging along a bridge on Brick Lane in east London, which were then removed<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/12\/06\/famous-banksy-artwork-london-mysteriously-disappears-overnight-22134495\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> in February of this year. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>A lone wolf appeared on Rye Lane in Peckham, south east London, the day after, before being <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/08\/fourth-banksy-piece-appears-peckham-21383577\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stolen just an hour later<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/09\/banksys-latest-piece-mystery-pelican-artwork-spotted-london-chippy-21392185\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fifth appeared<\/a> in Walthamstow, showing two pelicans eating fish above Bonners Fish Bar on Northcote Road.<\/p>\n<p>Then <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/10\/potential-new-banksy-mural-appears-northwest-london-21398508\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a cat on a dilapidated billboard<\/a>, overgrown with leaves, popped up on Edgware Road in Cricklewood, northwest London, the following day. <\/p>\n<p>In a break from silhouettes, Banksy then decorated the windows of a City of London Police box with <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/11\/new-banksy-appears-city-london-police-sentry-box-21401413\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a swimming school of piranhas<\/a> on Ludgate Hill.<\/p>\n<p>The City of London Corporation removed the box for safekeeping. It has yet to decide on a permanent home for the artwork.<\/p>\n<p>The following week saw the arrival of<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/12\/banksy-unveils-eighth-mystery-artwork-south-east-london-21405096\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a rhinoceros mounting a parked car<\/a> on Westmoor Street in Charlton, south east London.<\/p>\n<p>That one didn\u2019t last long \u2013 someone was filmed in a balaclava <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/12\/people-think-banksys-new-london-painting-is-his-best-work-yet-21405096\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spray painting over it days after it was created. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then a painting of <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/13\/ninth-banksy-spotted-london-zoo-freeing-animals-wild-21411505\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a gorilla freeing animals at London Zoo<\/a> appeared, the final piece of the puzzle.<\/p>\n<p>As was the case every day in early August last year, Banksy confirmed the artwork\u2019s legitimacy on his official <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/instagram\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram<\/a> just after 1pm each day.<\/p>\n<p>Gaugon added: \u2018A pattern emerged underneath all this. Banksy certainly has used animals in his work in the past, but the difference is these have often been creatures like rats or chimps.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The animals used so far seem rather benign, quite innocent to the world bar the wolf, certainly a change from his previous work.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The meaning behind Banksy\u2019s London pieces <\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEI_216314634-dd38.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-21379107\" alt=\"A new artwork depicting three monkeys unveiled by Banksy, painted on a bridge in Brick Lane, east London. Photo credit should read: Lucy North\/PA Wire\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tA third piece appeared on Brick Lane on August 8, 2024(Picture: Lucy North\/PA Wire)<\/p>\n<p>Desperate for an explanation, at least one person has speculated the artworks may be a commentary on immigration and refugees.<\/p>\n<p>Another claimed it was about <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/brexit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a>, pointing to the cat painted on a billboard, because billboards carried the \u2018\u00a3350million for the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/nhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> promise during the Brexit campaign\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Writing under Banksy\u2019s Instagram post of the piece, they said: \u2018The cat out of the bag meaning the truth about Brexit. The cats symbolised the scratching of a billboard that\u2019s gone to wrack and ruin, with the messages on it long gone.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, just days after it was put up, the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/08\/10\/potential-new-banksy-mural-appears-northwest-london-21398508\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stretching cat piece was removed. <\/a>Its whereabouts are unknown. <\/p>\n<p>Gaugon told <strong>Metro <\/strong>he believes Banksy was inspired to create the animal series because of the state of the world.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u2018Although there is so much going on, it is hard to pinpoint what he is specifically referring to at the moment.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>However, people may be overthinking the meaning, Banksy\u2019s support organisation, Pest Control Office, suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Banksy\u2019s aim might be to cheer people up with \u2018unexpected amusement\u2019 amid bleak news headlines, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/article\/2024\/aug\/10\/meaning-new-banksy-series-revealed-latest-london-artwork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Observer<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Does the geography of the Banksy pieces matter?<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEC_216487850-58d2.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-21386738\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe fourth work appeared in Peckham, southeast London (Picture: Banksy\/Instagram)<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/SEI_216678189-b129.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-21394304\" alt=\"Undated handout photo issued by Banksy of his new artwork depicting pelicans eating fish, painted on the side of Bonners Fish Bar, on Pretoria Avenue, in Walthamstow, east London.
