He has changed his tone since becoming president again. <\/p>\n<p>As various U.S. emissaries have held talks looking for an end to the war, both Trump and his top officials have become more reserved about the prospects of a peace deal. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday suggested the U.S. might soon back away from negotiations altogether without more progress, adding a comment that sounded like a repudiation of the president\u2019s old comments. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one\u2019s saying this can be done in 12 hours,\u201d he told reporters. <\/p>\n<p>The promises made by presidential candidates are often felled by the realities of governing. But Trump\u2019s shift is noteworthy given his prior term as president and his long histories with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. <\/p>\n<p>The White House on Friday did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Trump\u2019s evolving deadline comments.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at Trump\u2019s evolution on the way he talks about the Russia-Ukraine war:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A very easy negotiation\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>MARCH 2023: \u201cThere\u2019s a very easy negotiation to take place. But I don\u2019t want to tell you what it is because then I can\u2019t use that negotiation; it\u2019ll never work,\u201d Trump told Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity, claiming that he could \u201csolve\u201d the war \u201cin 24 hours\u201d if he were back in the White House. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s a very easy negotiation to take place. I will have it solved within one day, a peace between them,\u201d Trump said of the war, which at that point had been ongoing for more than a year since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p>MAY 2023: \u201cThey\u2019re dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I\u2019ll have that done \u2014 I\u2019ll have that done in 24 hours,\u201d Trump said during <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-cnn-town-hall-things-to-know-7be863292956dd2663537880dfbd8c3f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a town hall<\/a> on CNN.<\/p>\n<p>JULY 2024: When asked to respond to Trump\u2019s one-day claim, Russia\u2019s United Nations Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-russia-ukraine-war-un-election-a78ecb843af452b8dda1d52d137ca893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told reporters<\/a> that \u201cthe Ukrainian crisis cannot be solved in one day.\u201d Afterward, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said that \u201ca top priority in his second term will be to quickly negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AUGUST 2024: \u201cBefore I even arrive at the Oval Office, shortly after I win the presidency, I will have the horrible war between Russia and Ukraine settled,\u201d Trump told a National Guard Conference. \u201cI\u2019ll get it settled very fast. I don\u2019t want you guys going over there. I don\u2019t want you going over there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Trump wins in November<\/p>\n<p>DEC. 16, 2024: \u201cI\u2019m going to try,\u201d Trump said during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago club, asked if he thought he could still make a deal with Putin and Zelenskyy to end the war.<\/p>\n<p>JAN. 8, 2025: In a Fox News Channel interview, retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg \u2014 now serving as Trump\u2019s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia \u2014 proposed a 100-day deadline to end the war. Friday marked 100 days since that interview. The 100th day of Trump\u2019s presidency is April 30.<\/p>\n<p>Trump becomes president and starts negotiations<\/p>\n<p>JAN. 31: Trump says his new administration has already had \u201cvery serious\u201d discussions with Russia and says he and Putin could soon take \u201csignificant\u201d action toward ending the grinding conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be speaking, and I think will perhaps do something that\u2019ll be significant,\u201d Trump <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-putin-russia-ukraine-6c5a098488e64cd7643a89f4aaacd249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in an exchange with reporters<\/a> in the Oval Office. \u201cWe want to end that war. That war would have not started if I was president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FEB. 12: Trump and Putin speak for more than an hour and Trump speaks afterward with Zelenskyy. Trump <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-us-marc-fogel-prisoner-swap-98418693957b1fa0189ee8ac4e8b4f2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says afterward<\/a>, \u201cI think we\u2019re on the way to getting peace.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>FEB. 19: Trump <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-zelenskyy-ukraine-russia-war-7d18400b935166773bbd3b3323c8aa5f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posts on his Truth Social site<\/a> that Zelenskyy is serving as a \u201cdictator without elections.\u201d He adds that \u201cwe are successfully negotiating an end to the War with Russia, something all admit only \u2018TRUMP,\u2019 and the Trump Administration, can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FEB. 28: Trump and Zelenskyy have a contentious <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/zelenskyy-security-guarantees-trump-meeting-washington-eebdf97b663c2cdc9e51fa346b09591d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oval Office meeting<\/a>. Trump berates Zelenskyy for being \u201cdisrespectful,\u201d then abruptly calls off the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-trump-economic-deal-faf1ff881802c923370053e539ec26e4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signing of a minerals deal<\/a> that Trump said would have moved Ukraine closer to ending the war.<\/p>\n<p>Declaring himself \u201cin the middle\u201d and not on the side of either Ukraine or Russia in the conflict, Trump went on to deride Zelenskyy\u2019s \u201chatred\u201d for Putin as a roadblock to peace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see the hatred he\u2019s got for Putin,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThat\u2019s very tough for me to make a deal with that kind of hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian leader was asked to leave the White House by top Trump advisers shortly after Trump shouted at him. Trump later told reporters that he wanted an \u201cimmediate ceasefire\u201d between Russia and Ukraine but expressed doubt that Zelenskyy was ready to make peace.<\/p>\n<p>MARCH 3: Trump <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-zelenskyy-russia-ukraine-a15a459c9a3a393d040478ebbe250a9e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporarily pauses<\/a> military aid to Ukraine to pressure Zelenskyy to seek peace. <\/p>\n<p>Trump claims his 24-hour promise was \u2018sarcastic\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>MARCH 14: Trump says he was \u201cbeing a little bit sarcastic\u201d when he repeatedly claimed as a candidate that he would have the Russia-Ukraine war solved within 24 hours. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I was being a little bit sarcastic when I said that,\u201d Trump says in a clip released from an interview for the \u201cFull Measure\u201d television program. \u201cWhat I really mean is I\u2019d like to get it settled and, I\u2019ll, I think, I think I\u2019ll be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MARCH 18-19: Trump speaks with both Zelenskyy and Putin on successive days.<\/p>\n<p>In a March 18 call, Putin told Trump that he would agree not to target Ukraine\u2019s energy infrastructure but refused to back a full <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-putin-zelenskyy-ukraine-war-ceasefire-e8232c202998d5b934ca81bf98e74c55\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30-day ceasefire<\/a> that Trump had proposed. Afterward, Trump on social media heralded that move, which he said came \u201cwith an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a Complete Ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very horrible War between Russia and Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In their own call a day later, Trump suggested that Zelenskyy should consider giving the U.S. ownership of Ukraine\u2019s power plants to ensure their long-term security. Trump told Zelenskyy that the U.S could be \u201cvery helpful in running those plants with its electricity and utility expertise,\u201d according to a White House statement from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security adviser Mike Waltz.<\/p>\n<p>APRIL 14: Trump says \u201ceverybody\u201d is to blame: Zelenskyy, Putin and Biden. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a war that should have never been allowed to start and Biden could have stopped it and Zelenskyy could have stopped it and Putin should have never started it,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. <\/p>\n<p>Talk of moving on<\/p>\n<p>APRIL 18: Rubio says that <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rubio-ukraine-russia-war-trump-a90e3e49c276b75ed2542f2f0422ddd6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the U.S. may \u201cmove on\u201d<\/a> from trying to secure a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ukraine-rubio-witkoff-coalition-paris-74e93e2943687a7d8c7b23608919459a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia-Ukraine peace deal<\/a> if there is no progress in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>He spoke in Paris after landmark talks among U.S., Ukrainian and European officials produced outlines for steps toward peace and appeared to make some long-awaited progress. A new meeting is expected next week in London, and Rubio suggested it could be decisive in determining whether the Trump administration continues <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-putin-call-ceasefire-russia-ukraine-zelenskyy-0d2ca5b69761082979dd9836932ae84f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its involvement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are now reaching a point where we need to decide whether this is even possible or not,\u201d Rubio told reporters. \u201cBecause if it\u2019s not, then I think we\u2019re just going to move on. It\u2019s not our war. We have other priorities to focus on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the U.S. administration wants to decide \u201cin a matter of days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later that day, Trump told reporters at the White House that he agreed with Rubio that a Ukraine peace deal must be done \u201cquickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no specific number of days but quickly.
