Regionally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FTSE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FTSE 100<\/a> closed up 0.2%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FCHI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CAC 40<\/a> rose 0.2% and Germany&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.GDAXI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DAX<\/a> was higher 0.3%.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ganesh Rao<\/p>\n<p>Novo Nordisk in \u2018a better place\u2019 than many peers amid tariffs threat, CFO says<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/108182184-17544690801754469076-41057574219-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"'We are lowering our prices' in the U.S. says Novo Nordisk CFO\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/squawk-box-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Squawk Box Europe<\/a>&#8221; this morning, Karsten Munk Knudsen, chief financial officer of <a id=\"107214694\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/\" type=\"security\" brand=\"cnbc\" section=\"[object Object]\" contentclassification=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Novo Nordisk<\/a>, responded to U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s threat to slap 250% tariffs on pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n<p>Knudsen noted that the Danish pharmaceutical giant was &#8220;already investing a lot in the U.S.,&#8221; with a $4 billion expansion project underway.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we&#8217;re filling cartridges and putting it into pen devices, that&#8217;s predominantly U.S. manufacturing for U.S. patients, so that&#8217;s already in place,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And then on the active ingredients [in weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy], we are actually exporting more from the U.S. than we&#8217;re importing in terms of volumes. So the trade balance, if you can call it that, is actually in a rather good place, and putting Novo Nordisk in, I think, a better place than many other pharmaceutical companies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chloe Taylor<\/p>\n<p>Pharma stocks falterStock Chart IconStock chart icon<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg\" class=\"Collapsible-dismissButton\" alt=\"hide content\"\/><\/p>\n<p>European pharma stocks<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re around three hours into Wednesday&#8217;s session, and pharmaceutical stocks are extending their losses.<\/p>\n<p>The Stoxx Europe Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology index was last seen trading 1.8% lower, a day after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/05\/trump-says-pharma-tariffs-could-eventually-reach-up-to-250percent.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose<\/a> tariffs of up to 250% on the pharmaceuticals sector.<\/p>\n<p>Swiss pharmaceutical giants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NOV.N-CH\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Novartis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/ROG-CH\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roche<\/a> were 3.2% and 2.3% lower, respectively, by 11 a.m. in London (6 a.m. ET), while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/MRK-DE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merck<\/a> was 1.1% lower and Britain&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GSK-GB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GSK<\/a> shed 0.8%.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chloe Taylor<\/p>\n<p>Bayer shares drop after earnings<\/p>\n<p>Roundup weedkilling products for sale at a home improvement store on May 14, 2019, in Chicago, Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Olson | Getty Images News | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Shares of German chemicals giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BAYN-DE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bayer<\/a> were last seen trading 4.5% lower, after the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bayer.com\/media\/en-us\/bayer-posts-positive-second-quarter--and-progress-on-strategic-priorities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on Wednesday that it was &#8220;on track following an encouraging first half of the year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adjusted second-quarter sales jumped 0.9% year on year to reach 10.7 billion euros ($12.4 billion), while EBITDA \u2014 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization \u2014 fell 0.3% to 2.1 billion euros.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts had been expecting Bayer&#8217;s second-quarter EBITDA to come in at 1.8 billion euros, according to LSEG data.<\/p>\n<p>CEO Bill Anderson said in a statement alongside the results that Bayer was raising its 2025 currency-adjusted guidance for both sales and earnings, citing strong performance in the firm&#8217;s pharmaceuticals division.<\/p>\n<p>That came in spite of a net loss of 199 million euros in the second quarter, which the company attributed to special charges arising from litigation. The company is still entangled in legal action against its Roundup weedkiller, which claimants have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/03\/19\/us-jury-rules-against-bayer-in-roundup-cancer-case.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linked to health problems such as cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, news agency Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/world-at-work\/bayer-says-it-has-cut-12000-jobs-so-far-under-restructuring-push-2025-08-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> on Wednesday that Bayer had cut 12,000 jobs since it began its restructuring program.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chloe Taylor<\/p>\n<p>Pharma stocks fall after Trump\u2019s tariffs threat<\/p>\n<p>The Stoxx Europe Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology index was 0.8% lower by 8:46 a.m. in London (3:46 a.m. ET), as investors reacted to U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s latest round of tariffs threats.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/05\/trump-says-pharma-tariffs-could-eventually-reach-up-to-250percent.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> president told CNBC<\/a> on Tuesday that tariffs on the pharma sector could go as high as 250% within a year and a half.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest losses in the sector in early morning trade were Sweden&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/OND-FF\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oncopeptides<\/a>, down 7%, and Belgian life sciences firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GLPG-NL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galapagos<\/a>, down 5.3%.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chloe Taylor<\/p>\n<p>Beiersdorf shares drop 9%<\/p>\n<p>German chemical consumer goods group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BEI-DE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beiersdorf<\/a> lowered its full year sales guidance on Wednesday, citing difficult market conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The Nivea maker now expects organic sales growth of 3%, down from its guidance of 4% to 6% after a weaker-than-expected first half. The group said it expects an improvement for the rest of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shares were last seen trading 9% lower, taking the company to the bottom of the Stoxx 600 index.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Michael Considine<\/p>\n<p>European stocks open higher<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re around 15 minutes into Wednesday&#8217;s trading session, and regional stocks are broadly on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>The pan-European <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.STOXX\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stoxx 600<\/a> was last seen trading 0.3% higher, led by construction and industrials stocks.<\/p>\n<p>London&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FTSE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FTSE 100<\/a> was last seen up by around 0.2%, while the French <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.FCHI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CAC 40<\/a> and Germany&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.GDAXI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DAX<\/a> index each gained 0.5%.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chloe Taylor<\/p>\n<p>Glencore profit falls<\/p>\n<p>First-half profit at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GLEN-GB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glencore<\/a> fell 14% amid headwinds from lower coal prices, along with &#8220;temporary, but largely expected&#8221; operational factors at its copper business.<\/p>\n<p>The mining giant said its shares will stay listed in London, and that is does not believe becoming a U.S. domestic issuer would currently be &#8220;value accretive&#8221; for its shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Emilia Hardie<\/p>\n<p>Siemens Energy targets upper end of guidance after \u2018another strong quarter\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"107370069\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/\" type=\"security\" brand=\"cnbc\" section=\"[object Object]\" contentclassification=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Siemens Energy<\/a> posted a record quarterly order intake on Wednesday, as orders for its fiscal third quarter jumped 64.6% to 16.6 billion euros ($19.2 billion).<\/p>\n<p>On a comparable basis, revenue jumped 13.5% to 9.7 billion euros, while net income reached 697 million euros \u2014 up from a net loss of 102 million euros in the same quarter last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Siemens Energy reaffirms the raised outlook issued in the second quarter with a tendency towards the upper end of the guided ranges,&#8221; the company said. <\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chloe Taylor<\/p>\n<p>EU-U.S. tariff situation &#8216;will not get clearer,&#8217; Commerzbank CEO says<\/p>\n<p>Trade relations between the U.S. and European Union &#8220;will not get clearer&#8221; for businesses than they are now that the two partners have struck their tariff agreement, Commerzbank&#8217;s CEO told CNBC Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When asked during an interview on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/europe-early-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe Early Edition<\/a>&#8221; whether companies have received enough certainty from the long-anticipated and recently brokered trade deal to proceed with investment plans, Commerzbank&#8217;s Bettina Orlopp said, &#8220;I think they have to. We all know that things can change, and you need to stay flexible, to say it like that. But I think it&#8217;s important to move forward, because Europe needs to transform.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She nevertheless acknowledged &#8220;there will be a lot of uncertainty and volatility&#8221; in the coming quarters, while urging businesses to &#8220;stick to what we have in the moment and move forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Commerzbank chief noted that private clients have been pressing ahead with ventures, particularly in securities \u2014 while another segment of the lender&#8217;s client base representing medium-sized companies is &#8220;still hesitant&#8221; and &#8220;sits on a lot of investment plans&#8221; and had\u00a0previously been waiting for the advent of the EU-U.S. tariff deal and for the first measures of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz&#8217;s government.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ruxandra Iordache<\/p>\n<p>Deutsche Bank flags better-than-expected corporate earnings out of Europe<\/p>\n<p>In a note to clients on Wednesday morning, strategists and analysts at Deutsche Bank said European corporate earnings were coming in above their expectations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We expected earnings to beat consensus &#8230; but earnings came in even better than we expected,&#8221; they said. &#8220;So far 74% of companies in the STOXX 600 reported earnings. Aggregate earnings came in 8% higher than expected and grew by 7% yoy ex-Energy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They also noted that more European firms had raised their guidance this quarter than downgraded, adding that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/27\/trump-european-union-eu-trade-tariffs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently announced EU-U.S. trade deal<\/a> &#8220;should support that trend as reduced uncertainty allows for more upward revisions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, earnings did weaken sequentially, as the first tariff impacts were felt,&#8221;
