{"id":323669,"date":"2025-08-06T22:49:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-06T22:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/323669\/"},"modified":"2025-08-06T22:49:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T22:49:11","slug":"stock-market-today-live-updates-51","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/323669\/","title":{"rendered":"Stock market today: Live updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., August 6, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Jeenah Moon | Reuters<\/p>\n<p>Stock futures inched higher Wednesday night as traders mulled over President Donald Trump&#8217;s announcement of a new steep tariff on imports of semiconductors and chips.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@DJ.1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a> added 44 points, or 0.1%. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@SP.1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S&amp;P 500 futures<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@ND.1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nasdaq 100 futures<\/a> each advanced about 0.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Trump announced late Wednesday that there would be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/06\/trump-tariffs-chips-companies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100% tariff on imported chips<\/a>, but not for companies that are &#8220;building in the United States.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>News of the levy comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple<\/a> announced a plan to spend an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/06\/apple-details-100-billion-us-spending-expansion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> additional $100 billion<\/a> on U.S. companies and suppliers over the next four years. That&#8217;s on top of a $500 billion announcement Apple made in February.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to be putting a very large tariff on chips and semiconductors,&#8221; Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday afternoon. &#8220;But the good news for companies like Apple is if you&#8217;re building in the United States or have committed to build, without question, committed to build in the United States, there will be no charge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stocks are coming off of a positive session, aided by a 5% jump in Apple on Wednesday. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.SPX\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S&amp;P 500<\/a>\u00a0ended Wednesday about 0.7% higher, while the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.IXIC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nasdaq Composite<\/a>\u00a0advanced 1.2%. The 30-stock\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.DJI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dow<\/a>\u00a0gained about 81 points, or 0.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Traders continued to monitor tariff developments and quarterly financial results, which have mostly beaten analysts&#8217; expectations, according to FactSet.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Wednesday, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/06\/trump-trade-india-tariffs-russia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imposed an additional 25% tariff<\/a> on India, bringing total U.S. levies on the major trading partner to 50%. The president said the hike is because India continues to buy Russian oil, a sign that he is following through on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/14\/trump-trade-russia-ukraine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threats to punish Russia&#8217;s trade partners<\/a> unless a Ukraine peace deal is reached by September.<\/p>\n<p>Week to date, the S&amp;P 500 has gained 1.7% and the Nasdaq has added 2.5%. The 30-stock Dow has advanced 1.4%.
