{"id":324025,"date":"2025-08-07T02:03:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T02:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/324025\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T02:03:18","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T02:03:18","slug":"efl-confident-financially-stricken-sheffield-wednesday-will-pay-their-players-this-week-after-stars-refused-to-play-friendly-in-protest-over-unpaid-wages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/324025\/","title":{"rendered":"EFL confident\u00a0financially-stricken Sheffield Wednesday will pay their players this week after stars refused to play friendly in protest over unpaid wages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-194\/mike-keegan.html\" class=\"author\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MIKE KEEGAN, CHIEF SPORTS REPORTER<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  13:03 EDT, 6 August 2025   |  Updated:  17:06 EDT, 6 August 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The EFL is confident Sheffield Wednesday will pay its players this week \u2013 and be in a position to play its opening fixture of the season on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Solidarity payments are due to drop from the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/premierleague\/index.html\" id=\"mol-723f4900-72e6-11f0-a486-2bd3adb40540\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Premier League<\/a> in the near future, which mean that the financially-stricken Championship side should be able to ensure the players that remain will finally get their monthly pay packet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">With under-fire owner Dejphon Chansiri attempting to sell amid an ongoing crisis at Hillsborough, wages for players and staff have been late four months out of five and for the last three months in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Players who remain at the club, after a summer of upheaval, remain unpaid for this month and refused to play in last weekend\u2019s scheduled friendly at <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/burnley\/index.html\" id=\"mol-7233b040-72e6-11f0-a486-2bd3adb40540\" rel=\"noopener\">Burnley<\/a> in a form of protest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A statement from the group released earlier this week suggested they could take similar action when the season starts and there were serious concerns within the EFL that Sunday\u2019s clash at Leicester may not go ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, talks between the EFL and the club are ongoing and, with the arrival of cash from the top flight, immediate concerns have been allayed. Despite the above, the situation remains grave.
