{"id":324400,"date":"2025-08-07T05:28:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T05:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/324400\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T05:28:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T05:28:11","slug":"dozens-more-countries-face-higher-taxes-on-exports-to-us-as-new-trump-tariffs-come-into-effect-trump-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/324400\/","title":{"rendered":"Dozens more countries face higher taxes on exports to US as new Trump tariffs come into effect | Trump tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Dozens of countries face higher taxes on their exports to the US now that Donald Trump\u2019s latest wave of country-specific tariffs has come into force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The sweeping \u201creciprocal\u201d levies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/31\/trump-extends-deadline-tariff-deal-mexico\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced by the White House a week ago<\/a> \u2013 just before a previous 1 August deadline was due to elapse \u2013 were in place as of a minute past midnight Washington time on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Just before midnight, Trump claimed on social media that billions of dollars would start flowing into the US as a result of the tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThe only thing that can stop America\u2019s greatness would be a radical left court that wants to see our country fail,\u201d the president wrote in capital letters, referencing an ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/31\/trump-tariffs-court-challenge\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">case in the US court of appeals<\/a> which is considering whether he exceeded his authority in imposing the \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The rates range from 41% on war-torn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/syria\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Syria<\/a> to 10% for the UK and will be applied on top of the usual tariffs applying to products imported to the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">This means that while Brazil\u2019s \u201creciprocal\u201d level is 10%, its total rate is 50% after an executive order <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/30\/us-brazil-lula-trump-tariffs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imposed a 40% additional levy<\/a> from Wednesday linked to the prosecution of the country\u2019s former president Jair Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The EU is the only trading partner where its baseline rate \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/28\/eu-us-trade-deal-tariffs-european-union-five-key-takeaways\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set at 15% after a framework deal<\/a> \u2013 will include previous tariffs. It means, for example, cheeses that are normally hit with import duties of 14.9% will be taxed at 15% and not 29.9%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Since the announcement late on Thursday last week, governments around the world have been racing to try to reach deals to avert border taxes they fear could deter investors and result in job losses.<\/p>\n<p>President Lula Da Silva talks on 5 August about the tariffs that President Trump will apply to Brazil.  Photograph: Ton Molina\/NurPhoto\/Rex<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The Swiss president, Karin Keller-Sutter, was in Washington on Tuesday for two days of meetings with senior Trump administration officials to try to reverse a 39% levy that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/04\/swiss-president-shares-plunge-us-tariffs-trump\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blindsided the government<\/a> when it was unveiled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The Swiss government were set to hold an \u201cextraordinary meeting\u201d on Thursday, following the return of officials from Washington<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Meanwhile, India\u2019s 25% tariff rate could rise to a total of 50% after Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/06\/trump-india-tariffs-russia-brics\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> imposing an additional levy <\/a>in retaliation for the country\u2019s purchase of oil from Russia. Delhi has 21 days to respond. Canada has been hit with a total rate of 35% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/jul\/31\/trump-canada-tariffs-order\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that came in last Friday<\/a>, while Mexico avoided an increase from its 25% rate on the same date after it was granted a 90-day extension.
