The shopping centre\u2019s owners have unveiled more details and drawings of the massive landmark, which would dominate the view as people come off the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/m32-motorway\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">M32 <\/a>into Bristol city centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Designs released on August 7 showed plans for the huge octagonal tower, the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/cabot-circus-plan-large-new-10308590\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">showpiece of the planned Cabot Gate redevelopment<\/a>, to be built on land on one side of the entrance to the shopping centre\u2019s main car park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">According to documents since submitted to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol City Council<\/a>, the tower could hold up to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/news-opinion\/calls-more-homes-families-hundreds-10132268\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">500 students<\/a>. Another building, on the opposite side of the entrance, is planned to be eight storeys high and may be used for even more student accommodation, or a 150-bed hotel or \u201cco-living\u201d space.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_AMR_070825_CabotGate_02.jpg\" alt=\"An aerial view of the site of the proposed development\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The huge new development would be on land in front of the Cabot Circus car park(Image: Hammerson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Hammerson, which owns the shopping centre in a 50:50 joint venture with global investment behemoth AXA IM, wants to transform the &#8220;underused&#8221; space in front of the Cabot Circus car park. Historic England has raised concerns about the scale of the proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The site of the proposed development is mainly occupied by Enterprise Car Rental at present. The brownfield site previously had planning permission for offices, but that lapsed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Along with the two main buildings, Hammerson is also proposing to build a new community space and a caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A new pedestrian route is being proposed through the site, together with a shared walking and cycling lane to replace the existing pavement along Newfoundland Way. Planting and landscaping would provide a green &#8220;buffer&#8221; between road traffic and pedestrians and cyclists.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1_AMR_070825_CabotGate_03.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>A view of the new proposed Cabot Gate development from Portland Square in St Pauls(Image: Hammerson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A spokesperson for Hammerson said: \u201cWorking in close collaboration with Bristol City Council on its ambitions for the city centre, we have set out a long-term vision to evolve our wider estate including leisure experiences, housing and workspaces as well as more cultural community uses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The buildings are being designed by award-winning Bristol-based architect Allford Hall Monaghan Morris. If approved, the Cabot Gate plans would add yet another huge student tower to central Bristol. A <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/massive-student-housing-scheme-tops-10061207\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">706-room development <\/a>is currently under construction in the heart of the nearby <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristoltemplequarter.com\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Temple Quarter Enterprise<\/a> zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Another <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/massive-bristol-student-complex-rise-10125090\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">huge new development is also in the works in St Philips<\/a>, next to the Dings. Bristol Live readers have <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/news-opinion\/calls-more-homes-families-hundreds-10132268\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">previously voiced their objection<\/a> to the vast amount of new student accommodation buildings being approved all over the city amid an ongoing housing crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Bristol University is midway through construction of a new <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/gallery\/first-look-inside-500-million-9549490\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a3500m Enterprise Campus<\/a> on the site of the former Royal Mail sorting office near Temple Meads station. The campus is scheduled to open in time for the start of the 2026\/2027 academic year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Historic England has already voiced its concerns about the impact the scale of the larger Cabot Gate building could have on nearby heritage sites, including the Grade 1 listed St Pauls Church and surrounding buildings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFrom the information given, we are concerned that there may be a significant impact on the historic environment,\u201d a letter to the council from HE Inspector of Historic Buildings and Areas Stephen Guy read. \u201cIn particular, given the proposed maximum of a 28 storey building on the site, this is likely to have various impacts upon the historic environment, notably the setting of many highly-graded heritage assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Along with the proposed development in front of the car park, Hammerson is planning to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/plans-radically-transform-cabot-circus-10107935\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">revamp the Quakers Friars area<\/a>, with a large health centre on Philadelphia Street one potential addition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/ms-announces-new-cabot-circus-9748934\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">huge new M&amp;S<\/a> is also set to open in the autumn in the three-floor site formerly occupied by House of Fraser, with <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/former-cinema-cabot-circus-transformed-9994481\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">a new Odeon<\/a> to follow in early 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cOur plans already include a substantial investment in Quakers Friars with new public realm, a potential health hub and a cultural venue,\u201d the Hammerson spokesperson said. \u201cThe plans are part of our ongoing commitment to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-centre\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol city centre<\/a> and follow a programme of investment into Cabot Circus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis includes the introduction of major new leisure, food and drink additions such as King Pins Bowl and Treetop Golf, as well as the transformational arrival of M&amp;S later this year and Odeon in early 2026.
