{"id":325334,"date":"2025-08-07T13:54:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T13:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/325334\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T13:54:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T13:54:13","slug":"expect-to-pay-more-for-these-items-if-youre-not-already-at-the-supermarket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/325334\/","title":{"rendered":"Expect to pay more for these items (if you\u2019re not already) at the supermarket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TBNTUJ4SWNDS3OSB3SBLUFAJPE\">Anyone who buys groceries knows food prices are going in one direction: up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FYDCWW6UVFFRXH2UNGPUGKYPAU\">Whether it\u2019s coffee, ground beef or tomatoes, shoppers are forking over more for everyday staples at the checkout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XPKMRS72ABE4XPPKW6KSUEIKG4\">According to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data, grocery prices were up about 2.4% in June over the previous year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VSINGWDLVVE53BWQXWL2ZKRHJM\">It\u2019s enough to make some shoppers anxious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XW3QC2U4BFHJTI4P72IAKK37UE\">A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/business\/2025\/08\/majority-of-us-adults-are-stressed-about-rising-grocery-costs-poll.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/business\/2025\/08\/majority-of-us-adults-are-stressed-about-rising-grocery-costs-poll.html\">poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found half of all Americans <\/a>describe the cost of groceries as a \u201cmajor\u201d source of stress in their life right now, while 33% say it\u2019s a \u201cminor\u201d source of stress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TIAJS5BZWRDA3J6DAGILPSCL5U\">Reasons for the hikes vary, from President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs to weather conditions such as floods, record heat and hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ONKQSXJH5VDNDPOTOQTFITTMOQ\">Last week, Trump signed executive orders to impose tariffs of between 15 and 41 percent on goods shipped to the U.S. from more than 67 countries. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/politics\/2025\/08\/trump-delays-start-date-for-his-new-tariffs-again.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/politics\/2025\/08\/trump-delays-start-date-for-his-new-tariffs-again.html\">The new duties go into effect on Aug. 7.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WWOFO5HSDFARPLHD67I4EH65Y4\">Trump argues the tariffs will boost U.S. manufacturing and protect jobs. Tariffs are taxes charged on goods bought from other countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZNZEK7UZIBGFJIKKHN7KNANYC4\">Under those tariffs, the <a href=\"https:\/\/budgetlab.yale.edu\/research\/state-us-tariffs-august-1-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/budgetlab.yale.edu\/research\/state-us-tariffs-august-1-2025\">Yale Budget Lab projects food prices will rise 3.4 percent i<\/a>n the short-run and stay 2.9 percent higher in the longer term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RRBFMKNTMZDRPCAQWWDXOYACD4\">Tariffs are expected to impact about 75 percent of U.S. food imports, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/research\/all\/federal\/trump-tariffs-trade-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/research\/all\/federal\/trump-tariffs-trade-war\/\"> The Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan Washington-based think tank.<\/a> It estimates higher prices on liqueurs and spirits, baked goods, coffee, fish and beer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3WEQ65FVYJE6FF2FIJ4W2MGULQ\">But it\u2019s not just tariffs driving the hikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MVSPGPCSXZAYDP3BP5TYK4TULY\">Prices on some items such as chocolate are skyrocketing due to poor weather conditions in key cocoa growing regions of the world. Beef prices are soaring as cattle supplies remain tight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DRSGF6TK4NDXTFIZPTAANNL2LY\">Customers have been taking notice, said Scott Karns, chairman of Karns Foods based in Silver Spring Township. At his regional grocery chain\u2019s stores he said shoppers are reacting by gravitating toward more store brands and stocking up during sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EPVI74322BDFNIJDLSLNQE5GBM\">\u201cI think they are more uneasy right now and more value-driven,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O7Z6WCDFURBCHBK6JZEQSX7MVE\">Along with buying store brands, he noted customers are making swaps, replacing steaks for ground beef to counter higher beef prices. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YGK74IFQIVDS3BD6IMQJMYH5XU\">High prices might be making headlines, but Karns said he\u2019s optimistic relief is in sight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NKCUAYGTD5E4ZJERW5EFUV2PLA\">Already, Karns said national manufacturers such as Kraft Heinz and Kellogg\u2019s are offering more deals and promotions to counter softening sales and avoid losing market share.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ATSGQCKBMRHNNBZ5LQKQV6QW44\">While select items will be impacted by tariffs or other factors such as weather, Karns said he expects overall inflation to stabilize. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LRUTS3DRAZFIJPWFRZOMM52ILQ\">\u201cPrices went up significantly in the last couple of years, but we are starting to see softening,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m cautiously optimistic in the next year we won\u2019t see big food inflation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X2NDDEZXDZBVRN3EAPBNKSCATE\">Here\u2019s a closer look at seven everyday items that are already seeing price increases or are expected to soon<\/p>\n<p><b>Bananas<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6P3V4EKO25H43EX5FQXVQ4PBQE\">Expect to pay higher prices for a bunch of bananas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RHAO6OYH3NFS3B2AEOPYO5SOYY\">Produce imported from Central and South America, including cucumbers, pineapples and peppers, are likely to go up under the new reciprocal tariffs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7TONSU2GRRAKDBU6HJNAQNPY5Y\">The hikes are hard to avoid, mostly because about 90 percent of bananas are grown outside the United States in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala and Honduras.<\/p>\n<p><b>Paper Products<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2OPSZWXWM5CRFFTREQQOZB62G4\">Prices in the paper aisle for products like toilet paper and paper towels have been on the rise. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E3MRTZHTMJCBNMFMEN6M3725P4\">Procter &amp; Gamble recently announced it is raising prices in reaction to tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P6R32HEETJCBVCMKQTOH5BY7OM\">The maker of such products as Charmin toilet paper and Tide laundry detergent said it will raise prices on about 25% of its products starting this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BMTKXY3FQRCVHCRQUDUTQ7DKMQ\">The company said it expects to take a $1 billion hit from tariffs at a time when consumers are becoming more cautious about spending. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MJYXEZN7VJDKRBVCGXPDH2P6DQ\">P&amp;G imports raw ingredients, packaging materials and some finished products into the U.S. from China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DXIEKC543BCOTGYNK5ABNWUJDM\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/29\/business\/tide-charmin-price-increases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/29\/business\/tide-charmin-price-increases\">According to CNN<\/a>, the company\u2019s CEO Jon Moeller blamed several factors for deflated consumer spending on its products, including \u201ctariffs, inflation, interest rates, political and social divisiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Beef display in grocery store.\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"hero-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/H55PQ3OB2BEI7GSEPBNLX4N2VI.jpg\" \/>The vast majority of U.S. adults are at least somewhat stressed about the cost of groceries, a new poll finds, as prices continue to rise and concerns about the impact of President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs remain widespread. Huh)AP<b>Beef<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"B73SJJRQAJCATONMYUNFDQYUII\">Mike Pronio, owner of the family-operated Pronio\u2019s Market in Derry Township, said beef prices are through the roof.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"37VF4XU65VF5XF55UGTFYS5PMU\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a problem for a while, but it really got bad. Every week it goes up 20 to 30 cents a pound,\u201d he said, adding the price leveled off last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DNCG2BPXOBCNPI7QYVANGUAEME\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/food\/2025\/07\/beef-prices-have-soared-in-the-us-and-not-just-during-grilling-season.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/food\/2025\/07\/beef-prices-have-soared-in-the-us-and-not-just-during-grilling-season.html\">The average price of a pound of ground beef rose to $6.12 in June, up nearly 12% from a year ago,<\/a> according to U.S. government data. The average price of all uncooked beef steaks rose 8% to $11.49 per pound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XPYEDCE3NVEBFIHYWQOTL7UF5Y\">Beef prices have been steadily rising over the past 20 years because the supply of cattle remains tight while beef remains popular.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"36NKWCQAM5CFDA44OY5EE3J5UE\">Many factors are behind the declines including drought and cattle prices and the emergence of a parasite in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><b>Chocolate<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T3WTHDBXBVGJ3PS5MK7ZRQZWM4\">Buying chocolate is hardly sweet these days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PPHTIT56D5B4HPGCQV6KPTEXBE\">Chocolate prices have been ticking upwards the past several years. The increases are the result of bad weather and crop disease in Ghana and the Ivory Coast in Western Africa, one of the world\u2019s key cocoa growing regions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2JYQDDEQYNGPNEA3D6ZN345LLU\">Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/food\/2025\/07\/your-favorite-hershey-chocolate-treats-are-about-to-cost-more.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pennlive.com\/food\/2025\/07\/your-favorite-hershey-chocolate-treats-are-about-to-cost-more.html\">The Hershey Company said<\/a> it informed its retail partners it is raising prices by a percentage in the \u201clow double-digits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WALN3ZZ7BVGHNEMCZMV4WRZOAM\">The Derry Township company cites rising cocoa prices as the reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GURFVY5IXZFWZLWXLKB44WHUG4\">In 2024, cocoa futures increased 178% after a 61% hike in 2023, according to data from FactSet.<\/p>\n<p><b>Coffee <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3OMON3MEXJDSDGRK5LF76AFHFA\">A tariff imposed on a key coffee growing region of the world plus supply chain constraints are pushing up coffee prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MIRGYP4K2VEMVAMU6O2XYL6KNU\">Trump recently placed a 50% tariff on Brazil, one of the United States\u2019 key suppliers of arabica beans. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YP3ZGCDC35EMXHQGU5HE53M7XU\">\u201cAmericans are going to feel the impact of the tariffs in their morning brew. That\u2019s a very significant tax on the leading producer of coffee,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/07\/16\/trump-tariffs-raise-coffee-prices\/85195389007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2025\/07\/16\/trump-tariffs-raise-coffee-prices\/85195389007\/\">food economist and Michigan State University professor David Ortega, told USA Today.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2B2BNRDRHVA33FNHM4INYB3IHE\">The tariffs add to already rising coffee prices, which have steadily been climbing due to droughts in key growing areas such as Brazil and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TVGCV5UNEFGDNMKUXA2RAT64GI\">The average price of a pound of ground roast coffee is about $8.13, up from $6.25 the year prior and $4.52 in 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. <\/p>\n<p><b>Beer, wine &amp; spirits<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OK7E64ZQUBG5TGXUURF4HORSPM\">Many popular imported alcoholic beverages could see price hikes, whether Irish whiskey, Champagne or Italian wine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4L3MQ2G7VNDITJ3XRHJ6GNEGXY\">The U.S. and European Union are still hashing out whether alcohol will be included or exempt from 15 percent tariffs on European goods. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"C7Z5NLZNSZH2DH2PEBHQ3R3WRU\">\u201cIt is extremely disappointing and utterly exasperating that the U.S. and EU have not yet come to an agreement on spirits, which is an easy win for the United States that will help boost our economic vitality during this challenging time for the hospitality industry,\u201d Distilled Spirits Council President and CEO Chris Swonger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.distilledspirits.org\/news\/discus-statement-in-response-to-the-u-s-spirits-sector-remaining-on-the-sidelines-as-u-s-eu-finalize-framework-of-trade-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.distilledspirits.org\/news\/discus-statement-in-response-to-the-u-s-spirits-sector-remaining-on-the-sidelines-as-u-s-eu-finalize-framework-of-trade-agreement\/\">said in a statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Fish &amp; Other Seafood<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3VJB47S25VHIPPQDSO2YFJC5RM\">Prices of imported seafood and fish are likely to increase under tariffs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PH5CFFU4DFASRA5SPV4QB3H5UU\">In 2020, the United States imported about 80 percent of seafood consumed, according to NOAA Fisheries. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EWWBP4NEHRBH7G7OLJQ2T3UST4\">Imported fish and seafood from countries including Thailand and Indonesia face tariffs of about 20 percent under the latest trade deals.<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
