{"id":325419,"date":"2025-08-07T14:38:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T14:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/325419\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T14:38:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T14:38:15","slug":"eu-resists-renewed-trump-pressure-to-shift-digital-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/325419\/","title":{"rendered":"EU resists renewed Trump pressure to shift digital rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n         Published on<br \/>\n            07\/08\/2025 &#8211; 16:27 GMT+2\n            <\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n          ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>EU digital rules are not up for discussion, a spokesperson for the European Commission said in response to media reports that the US administration of President Donald Trump has instructed its diplomats to launch a lobbying campaign against the bloc\u2019s digital rulebook.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/society-equity\/rubio-orders-us-diplomats-launch-lobbying-blitz-against-europes-tech-law-2025-08-07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported <\/a>on Wednesday that a memo signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, warned that the EU was pursuing &#8220;undue&#8221; restrictions on freedom of expression in its efforts to combat hate speech and disinformation. <\/p>\n<p>It warned against the Digital Services Act (DSA) \u2013 online platform rules in place from late 2023 with the aim to curb illegal content and products online.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Commission told Euronews in response that \u201cour EU regulations and standards were never up for discussion, and this will not change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe firmly rebut any censorship claims. The censorship allegations relative to the DSA are completely unfounded. Freedom of expression is a fundamental right in the EU,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>EU rules have been the subject of several attacks since Trump came to power in January. Not only by government officials, but also by the Big Tech companies themselves.<\/p>\n<p>In April, the Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/04\/08\/big-tech-probes-non-negotiable-in-us-trade-talks-brussels-warns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reiterated <\/a>it will not make any concessions on its digital and technology rules as part of any trade negotiations with the United States after a senior advisor of Trump openly accused the bloc of waging &#8220;lawfare&#8221; against the country&#8217;s Big Tech companies. <\/p>\n<p>EU Tech Commissioner Henna Virkkunen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/04\/03\/eu-digital-rules-are-fair-because-they-apply-to-everybody-says-henna-virkkunen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told <\/a>Euronews in April: &#8220;Our rules are very fair, because they are the same rules for everybody who is operating and doing business in the European Union.
