US president says he directed the Commerce Department to immediately work on a \u2018new and highly accurate\u2019 survey.<\/p>\n
Washington, DC \u2013<\/strong> United States President Donald Trump has said that he directed officials to exclude undocumented immigrants from being counted in the Census<\/a> \u2013 a survey of the US population conducted every 10 years.<\/p>\n Trump said he directed the Commerce Department, which oversees the US Census Bureau, to immediately work on \u201cnew and highly accurate\u201d survey based on \u201cmodern day facts and figures\u201d and the results of the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS,\u201d Trump wrote in a social media post. \u201cThank you for your attention to this matter!\u201d<\/p>\n The next Census is due in 2030, but it is not clear if Trump is calling for a new survey in the near future.<\/p>\n During his first term, the US president tried to add a citizenship question to the Census, but his efforts were blocked by the courts.<\/p>\n The Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that the US administration<\/a> failed to provide a \u201creasoned\u201d explanation for adding the question.<\/p>\n This time, however, if Trump\u2019s Census policy is challenged legally, it could go before a more conservative Supreme Court.<\/p>\n Trump appointed three justices serving on the court currently.<\/p>\n Critics say excluding undocumented immigrants from the Census would violate the US Constitution, deprive local communities of needed federal resources and distort the data used by scientists and researchers.<\/p>\n The 14th Amendment of the US Constitution says that congressional representation should be based on \u201ccounting the whole number of persons in each state\u201d.<\/p>\n The Census already includes undocumented immigrants in the \u201chard to count\u201d category.<\/p>\n pic.twitter.com\/ou5k3RexW3<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) August 7, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n States use census data to draw congressional districts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
