{"id":326372,"date":"2025-08-07T23:02:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T23:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/326372\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T23:02:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T23:02:09","slug":"ofgem-announces-40-payouts-for-smart-meter-households-personal-finance-finance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/326372\/","title":{"rendered":"Ofgem announces \u00a340 payouts for smart meter households | Personal Finance | Finance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone with a smart meter will be eligible for \u00a340 payments if they have to wait more than six weeks for installation, or if their smart meter is broken and not fixed within 90 days, energy regulator <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/ofgem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ofgem<\/a> has announced.<\/p>\n<p>Sweeping changes to smart meter rules have been revealed tonight (Thursday, August 7) in a move which <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/money-saving-expert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Money Saving Expert<\/a> founder <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/martin-lewis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martin Lewis<\/a> has welcomed. <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/ofgem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ofgem<\/a> has unveiled proposals to bring in new rules which will see customers eligible for \u00a340 compensation if they have to wait more than six weeks for a smart meter installation.<\/p>\n<p>They will also be eligible if their meter is faulty or not operating in smart mode, and this isn\u2019t fixed within 90 days. The plans are part of the regulator\u2019s crackdown on broken smart meters, which has seen the regulator enforce repair or replacement of more than 600,000 faulty smart meters since last July.<\/p>\n<p>It is thought that millions of smart meters have been left in so-called &#8216;dumb mode&#8217;, where they have poor connectivity or stop automatically transmitting readings.<\/p>\n<p>The plans mean that suppliers will need to improve smart meter standards or pay out from early 2026, according to Ofgem.<\/p>\n<p>Charlotte Friel, director of retail pricing and systems at Ofgem, said: \u201cMillions of consumers rely on their smart meter every day for accurate billing, cheaper tariffs, automatic meter readings and real-time data to help keep track of spending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we know many customers that want a smart meter wait too long to get one installed or face delays on repairs when it stops working \u2013 this needs to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cThese new rules are about setting clear expectations of suppliers, incentivising them to boost smart meter standards, and protecting consumers from poor service if things go wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the package of reforms, <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/martin-lewis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martin Lewis<\/a>, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, said: \u201cBroken smart meters were high on the list of issues I raised with Ed Miliband when he first became Secretary of State. He promised me he\u2019d investigate, so I was pleased when they told me this announcement was coming.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Far too many smart meters, likely one in five, don\u2019t work as they should \u2013 a problem not just for all the homes with broken ones, but for the smart meter rollout. With so many dissatisfied customers, word-of-mouth is bad, so people tell their friends and neighbours not to get one.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to shift firms\u2019 focus from just installing smart meters to promptly fixing those that are broken \u2013 not just meters that go into dumb mode, but crucially all elements, including in-home displays that stop working.
