{"id":326441,"date":"2025-08-07T23:40:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T23:40:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/326441\/"},"modified":"2025-08-07T23:40:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T23:40:13","slug":"france-battles-biggest-wildfire-in-seven-decades-as-winemakers-point-to-loss-of-fire-break-vineyards-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/326441\/","title":{"rendered":"France battles biggest wildfire in seven decades, as winemakers point to loss of \u2018fire break\u2019 vineyards \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">In southern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/france\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/france\/\">France\u2019s<\/a> sun-seared Aude region, farmers have been reluctantly digging up vines, spurred on by declining wine consumption and state subsidies, removing a natural, moisture-filled brake against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/\">wildfires<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The loss of vineyards \u2013 nearly 5,000 hectares in Aude in the past 12 months alone \u2013 and its impact have been laid bare this week as the biggest wildfire in France since 1949 sweeps through the region, fanned by strong winds and parched vegetation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">On Thursday, around 2,000 firefighters battled to control a blaze that has burned an area bigger than Paris, scorching homes, forest and farmland, and killing one person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Gusting winds saw the fire\u2019s front lines jump hundreds of metres across a tinderbox landscape at a time, with the blaze at one stage advancing 5kph. But local winemakers and mayors are also blaming the loss of vineyards for the fire\u2019s rapid spread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cIt\u2019s very striking that everywhere where there were vineyards, the fire was for the most part stopped,\u201d French prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/francois-bayrou\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/francois-bayrou\/\">Francois Bayrou<\/a> told growers on Wednesday as he visited the fire zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The wildfire has charred some vineyards. But in many areas, neatly-manicured rows of vines and scrub-free soils survived as the fire burned around them, even if their grapes were destroyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Baptiste Cabal, whose family cultivates 60 hectares in Saint-Laurent-de-La-Cabrerisse, at the epicentre of the blaze, said ripped-up vineyards were often left fallow, overtaken by scrub and brush.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cLess idle land and more vines would be much better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Aude, part of the historic Corbieres wine belt known for its rich, aromatic reds, has lost seven per cent of its vineyards this year alone, extending a steady decline in recent decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The government is paying growers \u20ac4,000 euros per hectare to tear up their vines to lower production to curb excess supply as drinking habits change.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"On Thursday, around 2,000 firefighters battled to control a blaze that has burned an area bigger than Paris. Photograph: Philippe Magoni\/ EPA <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">While it has encouraged other crops like olives and pistachios that can withstand the Mediterranean summer, local growers say there are no alternatives in the parched hills of Aude after sheep farming mostly disappeared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Europe is heating up at twice the global average speed and is the world\u2019s fastest-warming continent. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\/\">Climate change<\/a> increases hot and dry conditions that help fires spread faster, burn longer and rage more intensely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \"> Aude has been in a state of drought for three straight years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cNothing has been able to replace vines,\u201d said Ludovic Roux, a wine grower and president of Aude\u2019s chamber of agriculture. \u201cVines are the last barrier against fires.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Local growers said hundreds of hectares of working vineyards had been destroyed while grapes from other plots risked being unusable after being covered in fire-retardant chemicals, or because smoke will spoil their taste.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"At least one person has died in one of the biggest wildfires in France since 1949.
