{"id":326975,"date":"2025-08-08T04:30:24","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T04:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/326975\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T04:30:24","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T04:30:24","slug":"racing-nsw-strike-deal-with-australian-turf-club-to-launch-sydney-birdcage-at-royal-randwick-racecourse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/326975\/","title":{"rendered":"Racing NSW strike deal with Australian Turf Club to launch Sydney Birdcage at Royal Randwick Racecourse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bob Geldof and Elizabeth Hurley were among the famous faces mixing with heavy-hitters of the business world during its Cup carnival in 2024 and prominent attendees over the years have included James Packer, Naomi Campbell, Nicole Kidman and Kim Kardashian.<\/p>\n<p>Racing authorities have ambitions for Sydney\u2019s own corporate and celebrity mecca to hit the same heights, but trackside, as opposed to the Birdcage, where some marquees don\u2019t have a view of the course and there are those who spend the day without seeing a horse.<\/p>\n<p>The other key difference is that it is planned to be in place year-round, not a pop-up facility for a carnival.<\/p>\n<p>It will accommodate up to 3000 guests at a time and replace the marquee just past the bend beyond the finish line at Randwick, which has been used at the venue since it was purchased from Sydney Olympics organisers following the 2000 Games.<\/p>\n<p>A modular, shipping container-style setting is being designed by Melbourne-based company Spacecube.<\/p>\n<p>It is the latest chapter in a hotly contested interstate landscape in which relations between Australia\u2019s two largest racing jurisdictions have been rocky over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Noses were put out of joint below the border by the creation of new events, including The Everest and the $10 million Golden Eagle, which has competed with Melbourne\u2019s spring carnival for eyeballs as well as leading horses and jockeys.<\/p>\n<p>Loading<\/p>\n<p>Racing NSW then took Racing Victoria to court two years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/sport\/racing\/racing-nsw-takes-four-states-to-court-over-secret-documents-20230208-p5cix0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alleging anti-competitive behaviour.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That case has been called off, and V\u2019landys\u2019 long-held desire for The Everest to be granted group 1 status has been realised.<\/p>\n<p>But the launch of Base Camp, devised to give Sydney a premium corporate sport offering at a level not currently available, shapes as another example of taking on Melbourne racing.<\/p>\n<p>The ATC has a development application with NSW Planning for a seven-story hotel and function centre on that part of the racecourse land, which lies near Alison Road at the northern end of the track, but the new corporate area will be located there while that submission remains under consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The race club reported a sold-out crowd of 49,117 for last year\u2019s running of The Everest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Bob Geldof and Elizabeth Hurley were among the famous faces mixing with heavy-hitters of the business world during&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":326976,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4107],"tags":[1071,79,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-326975","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-racing","8":"tag-racing","9":"tag-sports","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114991269419256792","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/326975","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=326975"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/326975\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/326976"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=326975"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=326975"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=326975"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
