{"id":327043,"date":"2025-08-08T05:08:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T05:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/327043\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T05:08:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T05:08:11","slug":"palestinian-pele-killed-in-israeli-attack-in-southern-gaza-israel-gaza-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/327043\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Palestinian Pel\u00e9\u2019 killed in Israeli attack in southern Gaza | Israel-Gaza war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A footballer known as the \u201cPalestinian Pel\u00e9\u201d has been killed in an Israeli attack in southern Gaza, according to the Palestine Football Association (PFA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Suleiman al-Obeid was killed on Wednesday when Israeli forces attacked civilians waiting for humanitarian aid, the PFA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u2018\u2018During his long career, al-Obeid, 41, scored more than 100 goals, making him one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Born in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a> on 24 March 1984, Obeid began his footballing career with Khadamat al-Shati, later playing for Markaz Shabab al-Am\u2019ari in the occupied West Bank, and Gaza Sport. A fixture in the Palestinian national side after his debut in 2007, Obeid gained 24 caps and scored twice, the PFA said, most memorably with a scissor-kick against Yemen during the 2010 West Asian Football Federation championship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">His talent on the pitch earned him the nickname of \u201cthe Palestinian Pel\u00e9\u201d \u2013 a nod to the legendary Brazilian widely hailed as one of the greatest players of all time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">His death adds to a growing toll of athletes lost in Gaza since the war began, with at least 662 sportspeople and their relatives reported to have been killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThe number of footballers killed or who died from starvation has reached 421, including 103 children,\u201d the PFA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Obeid is survived by his wife and five children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">According to the PFA, 288 sports facilities have been damaged or reduced to rubble across Gaza and the West Bank, from stadiums and training grounds to gyms and clubhouses.
