Photograph: Hernan Munoz\/AP <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cWe have a fire that has not yet been contained and is no longer spreading,\u201d said region administrator Christian Pouget. \u201cThe battle is not over yet. The fire could reignite in a more significant way. We still have a few days before we can say that the fire will be completely extinguished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The fire has swept through 15 communes in the Corbi\u00e8res massif, destroying or damaging at least 36 homes, with a full damage assessment still under way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">One person died in their home, and at least 13 others were injured, including 11 firefighters, according to local authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Three people were reported missing, the Aude prefecture said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/environment\/2025\/07\/02\/europe-heatwave-latest-updates\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Europe heatwave: Two die in wildfire in Spain\u2019s Catalonia regionOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, which has left a blackened landscape of skeletal trees and ash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cIt\u2019s very sad to think about the image we\u2019re going to give of our Corbi\u00e8res region, with its devastated landscapes and desperate women and men, not just today or tomorrow, but for weeks and months to come.
