The documentary A\u00a0Simple Soldier by\u00a0Ukrainian cinematographer Artem Ryzhikov and Colombian-German director Juan Camilo Cruz has been selected for the documentary program at\u00a0the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the press release confirmed on\u00a0August\u00a06.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0the film\u2019s synopsis, it\u00a0is\u00a0noted<\/a>: \u201cHe\u00a0doesn\u2019t fully leave the cinema\u2014he often holds both a\u00a0camera and a\u00a0weapon in\u00a0his hands. Artem documents the chaos and despair of\u00a0war while trying to\u00a0stay connected to\u00a0his family and young wife, waiting for him at\u00a0home. As\u00a0he\u00a0grows closer to\u00a0his comrades and confronts the brutal realities of\u00a0combat, we\u00a0witness the unfolding of\u00a0a\u00a0deeply personal story. This is\u00a0the human experience of\u00a0war\u2014about love, friendship, duty, and what it\u00a0means to\u00a0retain humanity amidst it\u00a0all.\u201d<\/p>\n

The world premiere of\u00a0A\u00a0Simple Soldier took place at\u00a0one of\u00a0Europe\u2019s largest documentary film festivals, Sheffield DocFest, held in\u00a0the UK\u00a0from June 18-23.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s TIFF will take place from September 4-14.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0the Platform Award section, which celebrates \u201cauthor films with distinctive directorial visions\u201d that introduce new international voices, another Ukrainian movie, the dystopian film To\u00a0Victory! by\u00a0director Valentyn Vasyanovych will also be\u00a0showcased<\/a>, DTF Magazine reported.<\/p>\n

To\u00a0Victory! takes place in\u00a0post-war Ukraine, a\u00a0country that won the war but \u201clost its society.\u201d The plot centers around a\u00a0disillusioned director trying to\u00a0find meaning in\u00a0life after a\u00a0career failure. He\u00a0lives separately from his wife and daughter, who refuse to\u00a0return to\u00a0the \u201cwar-torn country,\u201d yet they hold onto hope that the hard times will eventually pass and things will return to\u00a0normal.<\/p>\n

At\u00a0Sarajevo Film Festival four Ukrainian films were selected<\/a> for competitive programs. This year, out of\u00a01,036 films, only 50\u00a0were chosen, as\u00a0the competition programme on\u00a0Sarajevo Film Festival website states.<\/p>\n
