Finland hopes Trump will move with sanctions on Russia, foreign minister says<\/p>\n

The Finnish foreign minister, Elina Valtonen<\/strong>, <\/strong>said in the past hour that she hoped Trump will move ahead with sanctions on Russia.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Reuters this morning, she said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI certainly hope that President Trump will move forward with those sanctions.<\/p>\n

What we do see \u2013 and suspect now as well \u2013 is that the reason that Russia has again shown some willingness to talk, is that the increased arms deliveries [to Ukraine] are definitely piling up the pressure on Russia<\/strong> to find a way out of the war.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Valtonen also argued that \u201cthe only strategy to end the war in Ukraine<\/a> is to keep aiding Ukraine\u201d.<\/p>\n

The US president Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s original deadline for Russia<\/strong> to move on ending its invasion of Ukraine<\/strong> ends today.<\/p>\n

Asked if he was ready to follow through on his threats of sanctions and secondary tariffs<\/strong>, Trump told reporters last night:<\/p>\n

It\u2019s going to be up to him. We\u2019re going to see what he has to say.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He then added he was \u201cvery disappointed\u201d in Putin, but \u2013 in an apparent concession to the Kremlin \u2013 said he would be ready to meet the Russian leader, regardless of whether he meets with Ukraine\u2019s Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That contradicted a New York Post report citing a White House official who said that Trump would only meet Putin if the Kremlin leader met Zelenskyy, something Putin has previously rejected.<\/p>\n

The Trump-Putin summit could take place as early as next week<\/strong>, with the United Arab Emirates floated as a potential place for the meeting.<\/p>\n

But before that happens, will Trump move on sanctions as promised to exert even more pressure on Russia? Let\u2019s see.<\/p>\n
