It\u2019s slightly above the 219,000 new claims economists had predicted, but it remains in the healthy range. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2167056379.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Almost two million Americans are collecting unemployment in the highest figures since the COVID-19 pandemic\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/>Almost two million Americans are collecting unemployment in the highest figures since the COVID-19 pandemic (AFP\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The new unemployment numbers come after last Friday\u2019s grim July jobs report sent financial markets spiraling downward, spurring President <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> to fire the head of the agency that tallies the monthly jobs numbers.<\/p>\n<p>The jobs report showed the economy added only 73,000 jobs in July, falling short of the 115,000 experts predicted. <\/p>\n<p>Revisions of previous data also shaved a stunning 258,000 jobs off May and June payrolls. The unemployment rate ticked higher to 4.2 percent as Americans dropped out of the labor force and the ranks of the unemployed rose by 221,000.<\/p>\n<p>Trump blamed Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner for the Bureau of Labor Statistics, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/jobs-report-trump-global-tariffs-b2800358.html\">for the dismal hiring numbers<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need accurate Jobs Numbers,\u201d he posted on social media. \u201cI have directed my Team to fire this [former President Joe] Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified.
