The Sickleholme Golf Day in support of Sheffield Children\u2019s Hospital Charity returned for its 31st year last week. The event had previously been organised by retired Sheffield Children\u2019s surgeon, Ewen MacKinnon, but this year he received support from long-time event attendee, Matt Bruce (both pictured above).<\/p>\n

As a child, Matt underwent surgery at Sheffield Children\u2019s to save his life, and thanks to that care, he\u2019s gone on to live a healthy and full life. Matt didn\u2019t know until recently, however, that Ewen performed his life-saving care.<\/p>\n

During his 30-year career as a surgeon at Sheffield Children\u2019s, Ewen was known for his gentle manner and for going above and beyond for his patients. Since retiring in 2007, Ewen has only become more dedicated to his fundraising.<\/p>\n

He held the first Sickleholme Golf Day fundraiser in 1994, and to date, has raised more than \u00a3126,000 for Sheffield Children\u2019s. To recognise Ewen\u2019s tireless support, he was presented with the \u2018Outstanding Contribution Award\u2019 at the 2025 Sheffield Children\u2019s Hospital Charity Awards.<\/p>\n

To continue Ewen\u2019s fundraising legacy, Matt helped to organise this year\u2019s golf day. The event was attended by former Sheffield Children\u2019s colleagues and patients, local businesses, and golf lovers. Since its beginnings, the event has taken place at the stunning Sickleholme Golf Course in Bamford, amongst the Peak District\u2019s rolling hills.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s event was a huge success and raised more than \u00a35,000. The money will support the theatres department at Sheffield Children\u2019s, the department where Ewen provided life-changing care for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n

Matt said: \u201cI have had the great privilege to be invited by Ewen to assist in taking the golf day forwards, and as both my mum and mother-in-law worked with Ewen at Sheffield Children\u2019s for years, it felt right to say yes. What I didn\u2019t know was that Ewen had operated on me as a baby and ultimately saved my life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reality is, Ewen has saved and changed the lives of countless children. His name is one that those he helped will never forget. Proudly, I am part of that list, and proudly I am now supporting his fundraising that continues to help countless more.\u201d<\/p>\n
