Germany and Britain joined a chorus of international voices on Friday condemning Israel\u2019s newly announced plan to occupy the Gaza Strip<\/a>, with Berlin moving to halt weapons sales that could be used in the territory. <\/p>\n

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said his government would no longer authorize any military exports capable of being deployed in Gaza, following the Israeli security cabinet\u2019s approval of a strategy that would see its forces take control of the entire enclave.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new military push agreed by the Israeli security cabinet makes it increasingly unclear how these goals are to be achieved,\u201d said Merz<\/a>. \u201cThe German Government will, until further notice, authorise no military equipment exports that can be used in the Gaza Strip.\u201d<\/p>\n

In London, Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the Israeli decision \u201cwrong\u201d and urged it to be reconsidered immediately. \u201cA diplomatic solution is possible, but both parties must step away from the path of destruction,\u201d he said<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The plan, announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s office early Friday<\/a>, would begin with the Israel Defense Forces seizing Gaza City. It outlines five objectives: the return of all hostages held in Gaza, the dismantling of Hamas, the strip\u2019s demilitarization, and full Israeli security control, alongside the installation of an alternative governing authority \u2014 one neither led by Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority, which administers parts of the West Bank.<\/p>\n

\u201cA decisive majority of Security Cabinet ministers believed that the alternative plan that had been submitted to the Security Cabinet would neither achieve the defeat of Hamas nor the return of the hostages,\u201d a statement from Netanyahu\u2019s office <\/a>said. <\/p>\n

United Nations Human Rights Chief Volker T\u00fcrk said that Israel\u2019s plan must be halted \u201cimmediately,\u201d saying that it \u201cruns contrary to the ruling of the International Court of Justice that Israel must bring its occupation to an end as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The plan would lead to more \u201cmassive forced displacement, more killing, more unbearable suffering, senseless destruction and atrocity crimes,\u201d T\u00fcrk warned in a press release<\/a> Friday.<\/p>\n

Belgium\u2019s Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said that he would summon<\/a> the Israel ambassador in Brussels to discuss the security cabinet\u2019s decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Turkey\u2019s foreign ministry described Israel\u2019s latest plan on Gaza as a \u201cnew phase of its expansionist and genocidal policy in the region,\u201d adding that it \u201cseeks to render Gaza uninhabitable,\u201d in a statement on Friday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu\u2019s military expansion plans were reported earlier this week<\/a>, with officials close to the Prime Minister quoted as saying: \u201cThe die is cast<\/a>. We are going for the complete conquest of the Strip\u2014and the defeat of Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n

The proposal had drawn protests from Israeli families of hostages. On Thursday, family members sailed out<\/a> on boats towards Gaza calling for the government to bring their loved ones home.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vicki Cohen, the mother of hostage Nimrod Cohen, called Netanyahu\u2019s plan a \u201cdeath sentence\u201d<\/a> for her son and other hostages still alive in Gaza during a protest in Tel Aviv on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
