Hayes, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nuclearsciencelover\/video\/7393329938901765407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poked holes<\/a> in misconceptions about spent nuclear fuel on TikTok after being asked how much radioactive waste is produced each year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nuclearsciencelover\/video\/7393329938901765407\" data-video-id=\"7393329938901765407\" style=\"max-width: 605px;min-width: 325px;\"><p>  <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@nuclearsciencelover\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nuclearsciencelover?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">@nuclearsciencelover<\/a> <a title=\"onthisday\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/onthisday?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#onthisday<\/a> <a title=\"nuclear\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/nuclear?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#nuclear<\/a> <a title=\"waste\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/waste?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#waste<\/a> <a title=\"spentfuel\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/spentfuel?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#spentfuel<\/a> <a title=\"nuclearwaste\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/nuclearwaste?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#nuclearwaste<\/a> <a title=\"uranium\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/uranium?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">#uranium<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c original sound - I love science!\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/original-sound-7393329926688017183?refer=embed\" rel=\"noopener\">\u266c original sound &#8211; I love science!<\/a>  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It turns out that unfounded fears can be toxic in their own right, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ne.ncsu.edu\/people\/rbhayes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hayes<\/a>, who teaches nuclear engineering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just unbelievable how we&#8217;ve gotten to this point, where the truth about nuclear is so fantastically opposed,&#8221; Hayes said in the clip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The swimming pool visualization is the U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/ne\/articles\/5-fast-facts-about-spent-nuclear-fuel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">descriptor<\/a>, representing more than 2,204 tons. Hayes said America doesn&#8217;t make enough nuclear waste to cover a football field with 32 feet, or 10 meters, of the substance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just such a small amount of material,&#8221; Hayes said in the clip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The waste comes in the form of small ceramic pellets, not green ooze seeping from drums and spawning strange <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4351785\/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-origins-history-out-shadows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creatures<\/a>. It&#8217;s in fact the byproduct of energy generation from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/faqs\/faq.php?id=207&amp;t=21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">54<\/a> plants that account for nearly 20% of the country&#8217;s power supply \u2014\u00a0a stable, air pollution-free energy source in service for about a half century. The waste is stored at 70 sites around the country, without a leak in 55 years, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/ne\/articles\/5-fast-facts-about-spent-nuclear-fuel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DOE<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If the spent fuel is <a href=\"https:\/\/guide.thecooldown.com\/actions\/know-your-recycling-options\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recycled<\/a> \u2014 the U.S. doesn&#8217;t reuse it yet \u2014 more than 90% of it could still generate power, per the government fact sheet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear energy remains a taboo subject for many Americans, likely because of the haunting wastelands left at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/ehss\/articles\/radioactive-waste-issues-major-nuclear-incidents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chernobyl<\/a> and the few other meltdown sites around the world. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/focus\/chernobyl\/faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fallout<\/a> at those locations lasts for decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recent effort from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-business\/microsoft-constellation-energy-deal-nuclear-data-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> to reopen part of Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, the site of a nuclear <a href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/safety-and-security\/safety-of-plants\/three-mile-island-accident#:~:text=The%20Three%20Mile%20Island%20power,had%20two%20pressurized%20water%20reactors.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accident<\/a> in 1979, drew activist actress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-business\/jane-fonda-three-mile-island-nuclear-plant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jane Fonda<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/opinion\/commentary\/three-mile-island-restart-nuclear-energy-microsoft-jane-fonda-20241002.html?utm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ire<\/a>. Microsoft intends to use the atomic energy source to help power <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/articles\/ai-to-drive-165-increase-in-data-center-power-demand-by-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electricity-gobbling<\/a> data centers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/deals\/microsoft-may-pay-constellation-premium-three-mile-island-power-agreement-2024-09-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to Reuters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Efforts are underway to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-tech\/recycling-nuclear-waste-crystals-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reuse<\/a> the waste, too. Government experts are even planning to extract nuclear matter from unused warheads for power production. That&#8217;s not to mention the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/?s=fusion+energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fusion<\/a> research <a href=\"https:\/\/guide.thecooldown.com\/actions\/explore-critical-climate-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making progress<\/a> around the world, which would feature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/topics\/energy\/fusion\/faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no long-lasting<\/a> atomic waste if successfully developed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hayes said in the clip that the right recycling strategy can provide far more nuclear power than is needed. Wide-scale use could alleviate <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/climate-change\/extreme-weather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing risks<\/a> of severe weather, among myriad environmental and health concerns from planet-warming dirty-fuel-based plants, according to NASA and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2023\/explained-climate-benchmark-rising-temperatures-0827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other experts<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And yet people are terrified of it,&#8221; Hayes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nuclearsciencelover\/video\/7393329938901765407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To better use the electricity already coming to your home, be sure to unplug so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/guide.thecooldown.com\/actions\/unplug-your-energy-vampires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy vampires<\/a> at night.
