{"id":328453,"date":"2025-08-08T17:43:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T17:43:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/328453\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T17:43:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T17:43:11","slug":"germany-halts-export-to-israel-of-arms-that-could-be-used-in-gaza-as-global-outcry-grows-germany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/328453\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany halts export to Israel of arms that could be used in Gaza as global outcry grows | Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The German chancellor has indicated a significant shift in Berlin\u2019s staunch support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/israel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel<\/a> by stopping the export of military equipment that could be used in Gaza, as international partners condemned Israeli plans to take control of Gaza City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Friedrich Merz issued a sharply worded statement signalling the reversal after several weeks of openly criticising Israel\u2019s \u201cunclear\u201d policy goals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a> and the unfolding humanitarian disaster there but stopping short of concrete consequences in policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The German leader said Israel had the right to defend itself against Hamas and press for the release of Israeli hostages, which he stressed was Berlin\u2019s \u201chighest priority\u201d along with \u201cresolute negotiations on a ceasefire\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, Merz said his government \u201cbelieves that the even tougher military action in Gaza Strip decided on by the Israeli cabinet last night makes it increasingly difficult to see how these goals can be achieved. Under these circumstances the German government will until further notice not approve any exports of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"'Nothing left to occupy': Palestinians react to Netanyahu's Gaza plan \u2013\u00a0video\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754674991_336_1920.jpg\" height=\"259\" width=\"460\" class=\"dcr-1qi2at0\"\/>&#8216;Nothing left to occupy&#8217;: Palestinians react to Netanyahu&#8217;s Gaza plan \u2013\u00a0video<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Merz said his administration was \u201cdeeply worried about the continued suffering of the civilian population\u201d in Gaza, adding: \u201cWith the planned offensive, the Israeli government bears even stronger responsibility than to date for their provisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Israel\u2019s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, criticised the move, claiming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/germany\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany<\/a> was \u201crewarding Hamas terrorism by embargoing arms to Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Germany\u2019s announcement joined a chorus of condemnation from international leaders on Friday over Israel\u2019s plans to expand its military offensive in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The UN secretary general, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, described the plan as a \u201cdangerous escalation\u201d and said it risked \u201cdeepening the already catastrophic consequences for millions of Palestinians\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/european-commission\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Commission<\/a> president, Ursula von der Leyen, called on Israel to back away from its plans, while the European Council president, Ant\u00f3nio Costa, warned that the new offensive would have \u201cconsequences\u201d for EU-Israel ties.<\/p>\n<p>Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, has implored Israel to reconsider its plans to occupy Gaza City. Photograph: Sarah Meyssonnier\/Reuters<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe Israeli government\u2019s decision to further extend its military operation in Gaza must be reconsidered,\u201d von der Leyen said on social media. \u201cAt the same time, there must be the release of all hostages, who are being held in inhumane conditions. And humanitarian aid must be given immediate and unhindered access to Gaza to deliver what is urgently needed on the ground. A ceasefire is needed now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Costa, who heads the body representing the 27 EU states, said a new offensive would only further worsen conditions in Gaza. \u201cSuch a decision must have consequences for EU-Israel relations, to be assessed by the council,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Spain\u2019s foreign minister, Jos\u00e9 Manuel Albares, denounced the Israeli decision, saying it would \u201conly cause more destruction and suffering\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The UK prime minister, Keir Starmer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/08\/israel-wrong-to-escalate-offensive-gaza-city-takeover-plan-keir-starmer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Israel\u2019s decision was wrong<\/a> and urged it to immediately reconsider. \u201cThis action will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict or to help secure the release of the hostages. It will only bring more bloodshed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The UN high commissioner for human rights, Volker T\u00fcrk, said Israel\u2019s plan \u201cmust be immediately halted\u201d, and Turkey urged the international community \u201cto prevent the implementation of this decision\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After the devastating Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023, Germany strongly boosted its arms exports to Israel.
