{"id":328951,"date":"2025-08-08T22:08:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T22:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/328951\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T22:08:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T22:08:13","slug":"trump-says-end-of-russia-ukraine-war-will-involve-swapping-of-territories-donald-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/328951\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump says end of Russia-Ukraine war will involve \u2018swapping of territories\u2019 | Donald Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Donald Trump has said he will meet \u201cvery shortly\u201d with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/vladimir-putin\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> to discuss the war in Ukraine, and said an end to the three-and-a-half-year war would have to involve \u201csome swapping of territories\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019ll be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/07\/kremlin-denies-putin-russia-meeting-trump-zelenskyy-ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meeting very shortly with President Putin<\/a>. It would have been sooner, but I guess there\u2019s security arrangements that unfortunately people have to make,\u201d Trump told reporters at the White House late on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US president also said \u201cthere\u2019ll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a> and Russia and that the issue would be discussed soon but he gave no further details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bloomberg reported on Friday that the deal could cement some of Putin\u2019s territorial gains in Ukraine, effectively freezing the battle lines in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. Putin has claimed four Ukrainian regions in their entirety, although much of their territory remains under Ukrainian control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">US and Russian officials were working on a deal under which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/russia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia<\/a> would halt its offensive in exchange for the territorial concessions \u2013 making it a politically fraught proposal in Ukraine, Bloomberg said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump\u2019s comments came after Poland\u2019s prime minster said a \u201cfreeze\u201d in the conflict could be close, after speaking with the Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has communicated with Trump and European leaders in recent days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere are certain signals, and we also have an intuition, that perhaps a freeze in the conflict \u2013 I don\u2019t want to say the end, but a freeze in the conflict \u2013 is closer than it is further away,\u201d Tusk said during a news conference. \u201cThere are hopes for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tusk said Zelenskyy was \u201cvery cautious but optimistic\u201d about the ceasefire, Reuters reported. Ukraine was keen that Poland and other European countries play a role in planning for a ceasefire and an eventual peace settlement, Tusk said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump has previously expressed his readiness <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/07\/kremlin-denies-putin-russia-meeting-trump-zelenskyy-ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to meet Putin<\/a> one on one without preconditions, including direct negotiations between Putin and Zelenskyy, stoking fears that Ukraine may be left out of negotiations for the framework of a potential ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">If the summit happens, it would be the first US-Russia summit since 2021, when former president Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Zelenskyy has responded by speaking with European leaders including the German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, and the French president, Emmanuel Macron, who are key conduits to Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Fox News reported on Friday that a meeting between Trump and Putin could take place at the end of next week. Potential venues include Switzerland, Rome, Hungary and the United Arab Emirates, the conservative outlet said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Switzerland and Italy are parties to the international criminal court (ICC), which has issued an arrest warrant for Putin, and their law enforcement would theoretically be required to detain the Russian president. Hungary\u2019s prime minister, Viktor Orb\u00e1n, announced plans to withdraw from the ICC earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US envoy Steve Witkoff had proposed a three-way meeting with Trump, Putin and Zelenskyy but the Kremlin had ignored that suggestion, said the Putin aide Yuri Ushakov, and was \u201cfocusing on preparations for a bilateral meeting with Trump in the first place\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Putin has said he was not ready to meet Zelenskyy, even as the Kremlin claimed preparations were under way for a bilateral summit with Trump next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI have nothing against it in general, it is possible, but certain conditions must be created for this,\u201d Putin said of a meeting with Zelenskyy. \u201cBut unfortunately, we are still far from creating such conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jul\/22\/ukraine-is-existential-why-vladimir-putin-values-war-goals-over-donald-trump-ties\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump issued an ultimatum for Putin<\/a> to agree to a ceasefire or face secondary sanctions with the deadline set for this Friday.
