{"id":328981,"date":"2025-08-08T22:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T22:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/328981\/"},"modified":"2025-08-08T22:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T22:23:10","slug":"matildas-to-face-wales-in-historic-friendly-ahead-of-asian-cup-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/328981\/","title":{"rendered":"Matildas to face Wales in historic friendly ahead of Asian Cup campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Matildas coach Joe Montemurro says October&#8217;s friendly against Wales will be a crucial step in his squad&#8217;s preparations for next year&#8217;s Asian Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The match against Wales \u2014 the first between the two nations in women&#8217;s football \u2014 has been scheduled for October 25 in Cardiff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Matildas will also face a yet-to-be-determined opponent later in FIFA&#8217;s international window.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But it remains to be seen whether Sam Kerr, who has not played since tearing her ACL in January last year, will be made available for the two matches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-08\/steph-catley-shortlisted-for-ballon-dor\/105627144\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catley nominated for Ballon d&#8217;Or<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Matildas captain Steph Catley is one of 30 nominees for the Ballon d&#8217;Or Feminin, the top individual international award in football.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We are looking to make the most of the next few FIFA women&#8217;s international windows and Wales is the perfect test for the team as we have never played them before and they are a competitive side that will test our style of play,&#8221;
