{"id":329349,"date":"2025-08-09T01:42:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T01:42:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/329349\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T01:42:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T01:42:13","slug":"st-helens-dominant-win-marred-by-injury-as-paul-wellens-gives-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/329349\/","title":{"rendered":"St Helens dominant win marred by injury as Paul Wellens gives update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"2400\" height=\"1681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/AMZ_0427.jpg\" class=\"attachment- size- wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><strong>St Helens cruised past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seriousaboutrl.com\/rugby-league-news-wakefield-trinity-boss-joke-controversial-st-helens-sin-bin-after-tough-defeat-107190\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wakefield Trinity<\/a> but head coach Paul Wellens saw one of his key utility players suffer what could be a serious injury.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seriousaboutrl.com\/rugby-league-news-wakefield-trinity-st-helens-talking-points-saints-defence-controversial-sin-bin-107183\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> very dominant 34-4 win over Wakefield<\/a>, Jake Wingfield went down midway through the second half after carrying into contact with the Saints man visibly in pain and holding his lower leg area.<\/p>\n<p>He would then be helped off the field with the physios and play no further part before being seen in a boot and on crutches, a sight that no St Helens fan would have wanted to see.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Wellens was asked about the nature of Wingfield\u2019s injury when speaking post-match to Sky Sports and when asked if it was \u2018serious\u2019, responded: \u201cPotentially, it doesn\u2019t look good and he\u2019s in a fair bit of pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not had much luck in recent times so we\u2019ll obviously put an arm around him and get him assessed as soon as we can, and hope for good news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>St Helens building for play-offs as Wellens praises performance<\/p>\n<p>Wingfield has played in a number of positions for St Helens this year and has been one of their most underrated players, performing well in the pack but also in the spine when needed.<\/p>\n<p>His injury was the only blot on an otherwise perfect night for Saints with Paul Wellens\u2019 side running in six tries and winning with ease against play-off rivals Wakefield.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was really happy,\u201d Wellens explained before noting the loss of Wingfield and Curtis Sironen (HIA), adding: \u201cThere was a bit of adversity in the game which we dealt with, like we did a few weeks ago against Leeds, so it\u2019s great to see the team responding the way they did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did ensure to credit Wakefield, explaining:\u00a0\u201cIt was a strong start and we racked up some points but I think if you come into your house and turn the TV on and see the scoreline, you\u2019d probably think it was an easy game but it was anything nut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re a real quality side, really tough to handle so I thought the way we stood up tonight was excellent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a win that propels St Helens back to fourth but with a tough fixture run, Wellens conceded that it will be a hard final six games with his side not getting ahead of themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to keep going in the fashion that we are.
