of firefighters &#8220;averted a catastrophe,&#8221; Cordoba Mayor Jose Mara Bellido posted on X.<\/p>\n<p>The fire is out, he said, adding that firefighters and police would remain on site overnight.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tweet embed\" data-id=\"1953945076985475483\"\/>\n<p>Widely shared videos had shown flames and smoke billowing from inside the monument, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and is a\u00a0major tourist attraction.<\/p>\n<p>The blaze broke out around 9 p.m. local time (19:00 GMT) in one of the chapels in the Almanzor naves, according to <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/spain\/t-18996264\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain<\/a>&#8216;s El Mundo newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>It may have been caused by a short circuit in an electric sweeper, El Mundo and local media reported without elaborating on why.<\/p>\n<p>Three fire teams managed to control the fire and extinguished it within a short period.<\/p>\n<p><img data-format=\"MASTER_LANDSCAPE\" data-id=\"73578157\" data-url=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/73578157_${formatId}.jpg\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" alt=\"An inside view of Corduba's mosque-cathedral columns surmounted by striped arches.\" style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%;
