The children are holding up a red curtain that had been used to obscure the new mural before it was unveiled. \" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>Elaine Mansfield<\/p>\n<p>Jaylee, Mynah, Ashoka, Vishwam and Ananya helped to paint the wall<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A graffiti-plagued Belfast street entrance has been given an artistic makeover thanks to a number of local young budding artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The entrance to Maryville Street in Donegall Pass had its new mural unveiled as part of a regeneration initiative led by local businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Residents had called for an effort to brighten up the space, that had previously been hit by vandalism and graffiti &#8211; and a number of local children, led by artist Carla Hodgson, answered that call. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Ms Hodgson, who led the project by holding a series of workshops with local children aged six to nine, said the young people were the project&#8217;s driving force. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753966091_383_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/78f15780-747a-11f0-b7ce-61e45ed0448f.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A lady with brown hair, wearing a pink top stands in front of a bright, blue wall. Signs on the wall say &quot;bout ye&quot; and &quot;c'mon on in&quot;\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Carla Hodgson painted the wall, along with a group of children who live in the community<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;They&#8217;ve really put their heart and soul into it, it&#8217;s definitely more than just paint, it&#8217;s about them, it&#8217;s about where they&#8217;re from,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;It means more to the community, it&#8217;s made by them, it&#8217;s about them and it&#8217;s from their hearts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The children involved in the project helped design and paint the mural, adding personal touches like butterflies, flowers, clouds and rainbows. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Ms Hodgson held workshops with the children, leading to the mural&#8217;s design and then returned with them to paint it &#8211; a project that took four weeks in total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Chris McCracken, managing director at the Linen Quarter Business Improvement District which provided funding towards the mural, said the project came from conversations with local residents, reflecting a diverse group of people.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753966091_383_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1878a960-7472-11f0-ad5a-6daee3ba97a6.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Bright, blue wall artistic wall with graffiti of rainbows, buildings, green grass and butterflies\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mural which has been unveiled at Maryville Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He explained that the initiative was part of a strategy to work with communities on small, practical improvements to their areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Mr McCracken said the mural was an example of businesses and local residents working together and that future efforts could look at areas like employment or health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Amy Kelly, a lifelong resident of Donegall Pass, said the mural had given local children including her daughter a sense of involvement and pride in their neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;It&#8217;s something my daughter can walk past now and know that it&#8217;s something she did,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753966091_383_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/813ff590-747a-11f0-b7ce-61e45ed0448f.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Woman wearing a grey jacket stands in front of a black wall on the right hand side.
