Late-night hosts took aim at JD Vance<\/a> over his unusual birthday demand and Donald Trump<\/a> over his disastrous tariffs.<\/p>\n

Stephen Colbert<\/strong><\/p>\n

On The Late Show, Stephen Colbert<\/a> called it \u201ca significant day for our economy\u201d with Trump\u2019s controversial tariffs finally kicking in<\/a>. He said it\u2019s a day to \u201cset your clocks back to more expensive\u201d with import taxes now the highest they\u2019ve been since the Great Depression.<\/p>\n

Colbert said it\u2019s \u201cnever a great sign to be compared to the worst thing ever\u201d.<\/p>\n

Tariffs on certain countries are lower if negotiations have been successful or \u201cif the president\u2019s mad at you they can be much higher\u201d.<\/p>\n

This week saw Apple announce $100bn worth<\/a> of additional investment in the US, but there is a smaller pool of American workers with the skills necessary to make an iPhone. \u201cI believe America\u2019s children can do anything!\u201d Colbert joked.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s CEO, Tim Cook, was filmed this week in the Oval Office giving Trump a gift which was partly made of 24-carat gold. Colbert called it \u201clavish corporate bottom-smooching\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the same press opportunity, Trump again slammed Colbert for having \u201cno talent\u201d but did concede that he has better ratings than Kimmel or Fallon, whom he said also had no talent. \u201cWe\u2019re all equally untalented,\u201d Colbert said, before adding: \u201cThank you for watching, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colbert said that while we are \u201cplunging headfirst into techno-feudalism\u201d, the Secret Service<\/a> is busy raising the water level<\/a> of an Ohio river for Vance\u2019s family boat trip to celebrate his birthday. He called it an \u201cinsane spoiled baby emperor move\u201d.<\/p>\n

Seth Meyers<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Late Night, Seth Meyers<\/a> said that Trump \u201cclearly has no interest in doing the job of president\u201d and doesn\u2019t \u201cknow or care what his own administration is doing on a daily basis\u201d.<\/p>\n

He is too busy renovating the White House with plans revealed this week for a new $200m<\/a> ballroom<\/a> decked out in gold. Trump has said it\u2019s important as there hasn\u2019t been a president like him who has been good at ballrooms before.<\/p>\n

Meyers commented that it\u2019s \u201cnever been a problem that our presidents weren\u2019t good at ballrooms\u201d.<\/p>\n

To show how little Trump knows about the day-to-day, he played a clip just after the US illegally bombed Iran in which he was told by a reporter that the intelligence community said it had no evidence that Iran was developing a nuclear weapon, which the president called false.<\/p>\n

This week when he was asked about Robert F Kennedy Jr\u2019s decision to cancel $500m<\/a> in contracts for vaccine development, he also appeared confused. \u201cFor a guy who watches cable news all day, you sure seem caught off-guard by the news,\u201d Meyers said.<\/p>\n

There are also plans to put a nuclear reactor on the moon, a decision bragged about on Fox News with claims that \u201cTrump doesn\u2019t play by the rules\u201d. Meyers admitted that this is true as at Nasa, rule No 1 is \u201cdon\u2019t blow up the moon\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ignoring the inflation that\u2019s ballooning thanks in part to Trump\u2019s tariffs, the administration is instead having to deal with the fallout of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Trump \u201cflew into a rage again\u201d after being asked about it this week.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s still proving to be \u201cexplosive for Trump and his Maga base\u201d and so this week a dinner was planned on Epstein strategy involving high-ranking loyalists. Nothing like a \u201csecretive cabal\u201d of powerful people to settle the conspiracy theorists, Meyers noted.<\/p>\n
