The image has a date and time stamp at the bottom right corner.\" width=\"800\" height=\"420\" class=\"size-large wp-image-809098\"  \/><\/a>A red-footed booby hones in on a flying fish. <\/p>\n<p>Scientists attached minuscule cameras to two red-footed boobies, which recorded footage of the seabirds hunting a shoal of flying fish in the Indian Ocean. <\/p>\n<p>The birds live on a remote archipelago and were following the fish that can make powerful leaps out of the water. The camera caught the boobies plucking the fish from the air on 14 separate occasions. It is the first-ever footage of its kind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cameras recorded footage of the birds catching flying fish just above the surface of the water, while on the wing,\u201d says Dr Ruth Dunn, a Visiting Researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/news\/on-board-camera-footage-offers-birds-eye-glimpse-into-seabird-flights-and-feeding-behaviour\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener\">at Lancaster University<\/a> and lead author of the study. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe suspected this happened, but this is the first time that we\u2019ve had bird-borne footage like this showing them foraging and catching fish mid-air. It could suggest they are catching a significant portion of their diet in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The cameras the team attached were Little Leonardo video loggers that weigh a meagre 15 grams (3.6 teaspoons), which represents a further 1.7% of body mass for the birds. The cameras were equipped to the boobies via a plastic leg ring. <\/p>\n<p>The team also attached GPS and accelerator tracking devices to 18 more red-footed boobies to discover how the seabirds use the wind to travel hundreds of miles above open ocean in a bid to catch fish. <\/p>\n<p>By choosing favorable winds, the birds can fly faster without flapping more. This may be because flying fish stay airborne longer in stronger winds, giving the birds more chances to catch them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that the birds foraged in windy conditions and we think that this might be because flying fish are able to glide in the air for longer in these conditions, making them more accessible to the boobies,\u201d adds Dr. Dunn.<\/p>\n<p> Birds That Become Photographers <\/p>\n<p>While the boobies may have recorded the first-ever POV shot of a flying fish hunt, it is not the first time a camera has been attached to a bird. <\/p>\n<p>Pigeons have long been used to carry cameras during war, including the First World War and <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2020\/12\/29\/revealing-cold-war-espionage-photo-tech-spy-pigeons-concealed-cameras-and-more\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Cold War.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/spy-pigeons-2-800x429.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"429\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-499494\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/spy-pigeons-1-800x429.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"429\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-499493\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Last year, PetaPixel featured photographer David Degner who <a href=\"https:\/\/petapixel.com\/2024\/04\/14\/a-pigeon-took-these-photographs\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attached an Insta360 Go to a pigeon<\/a> which captured fascinating shots from above.<\/p>\n<p>The results of Dr. Ruth\u2019s and the team\u2019s research was <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rspb.2025.0774#d1e654\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener\">published in the Royal Society. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Image credits:<\/strong> Dr. Ruth Dunn, et al.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A red-footed booby hones in on a flying fish.
