THE story of King Charles II will be explored at an event in Lichfield.<\/p>\n
Lichfield Methodist Church will welcome back the \u201cMerrie Monarch\u201d who was only 12 when civil war broke out.<\/p>\n
He fought on his father\u2019s behalf during the conflict, commanding troops from the age of 14, before being forced into exile in 1646.<\/p>\n
Following the execution of Charles I he attempted to regain the throne but was defeated and escaped to in disguise to France.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson said:<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAfter a decade of chaos under the rule of Parliament, Charles was restored and was determined not just to restore stability, but to teach England to enjoy itself again \u2013 and he believed in leading by example.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom horse racing to theatre and astronomy to the introduction of coffee houses and newspapers, through plague, fire and a scandalous series of affairs, the reign of Charles saw an astonishing range of historic events and major developments in English society.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
