Brazil\u2019s foreign ministry has summoned the US charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires after the embassy posted comments about the trial of former president Jair Bolsonaro<\/a>, as relations between the two countries continue to deteriorate.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the embassy published a social media post in Portuguese criticising the supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the cases against Bolsonaro<\/a>, who is on trial over an alleged coup attempt.<\/p>\n

The post read<\/a>: \u201cMinister Moraes is the chief architect of the censorship and persecution of Bolsonaro and his supporters. His flagrant human rights violations have led to sanctions under the Magnitsky Act<\/a>, imposed by President Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoraes\u2019s allies in the judiciary and elsewhere are hereby warned not to support or facilitate his actions. We are monitoring the situation closely.\u201d<\/p>\n

The message was a translated repost of a statement<\/a> by Darren Beattie, the US\u2019s senior official for public diplomacy.<\/p>\n

The Brazilian government viewed the message as a direct threat to the other supreme court justices<\/a> presiding over Bolsonaro\u2019s trials and \u2013 given that Trump has yet to appoint an ambassador to Brazil \u2013 summoned the acting head of mission, charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires Gabriel Escobar.<\/p>\n

It was the third time Escobar had been summoned since Donald Trump began publicly defending Bolsonaro<\/a>, even citing the former Brazilian president\u2019s prosecution over the 2022 coup attempt as one of the justifications<\/a> for the steep tariffs imposed on Brazilian goods.<\/p>\n

According to a source at the ministry, the interim secretary for Europe and North America, Flavio Goldman, expressed to Escobar the Brazilian government\u2019s \u201cdeep indignation\u201d over the tone and content of recent posts from the embassy and the US state department, which Bras\u00edlia viewed as \u201cinterference in domestic affairs and unacceptable threats against Brazilian authorities\u201d.<\/p>\n

The US embassy did not comment on the meeting.<\/p>\n

Before Friday\u2019s summons, Escobar had attended a meeting on Thursday<\/a> with Brazil\u2019s vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin, who has been leading the Lula administration\u2019s thus far unsuccessful efforts to reverse the tariffs.<\/p>\n

Brazil says it has been seeking to open negotiations with the US since April, but has received no response.<\/p>\n

This week, Brazil\u2019s president, Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva, told Reuters<\/a>: \u201cThe day my intuition says Trump is ready to talk, I won\u2019t hesitate to call him. But today my intuition says he doesn\u2019t want to talk.
