We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 huxBsk\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>Britain would have lost the Second World War and would be speaking German <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/uk-gaza-aid-israel-water-b2804784.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">if Sir Keir Starmer was running the country <\/a>at the time, the US ambassador to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel<\/a> has said in a stinging attack. <\/p>\n<p>Condemning the prime minister\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/israel-gaza-war-hamas-occupation-netanyahu-hostages-b2804744.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticism of Israel\u2019s plan<\/a> for a full military takeover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/mike-huckabee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mike Huckabee<\/a> wrote on social media: \u201cSo Israel is expected to surrender to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/hamas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamas<\/a> and feed them even though Israeli hostages are being starved? <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid UK surrender to Nazis and drop food to them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a post on X on Friday, Mr Huckabee wrote: \u201cEver heard of Dresden, PM Starmer? That wasn\u2019t food you dropped. If you had been PM then UK would be speaking German!\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>In a follow-up post, the US ambassador to Israel suggested Sir Keir \u201cought to sit this one out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Huckabee was responding to Sir Keir\u2019s statement that Israel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/israel-gaza-war-hamas-occupation-netanyahu-hostages-b2804744.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decision to pursue its plan to take control of Gaza city was \u201cwrong\u201d. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2224017695.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir said that the Israeli government\u2019s plans would \u201cdo nothing to bring an end to this conflict or to help secure the release of the hostages\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>US vice president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/jd-vance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JD Vance<\/a> has also described a \u201cdisagreement\u201d about how the US and UK could achieve their \u201ccommon objectives\u201d in the Middle East, and said Donald Trump\u2019s administration had \u201cno plans to recognise a Palestinian state\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s office has unveiled new principles for military action, which include \u201cthe demilitarisation of the Gaza Strip\u201d, \u201cIsraeli security control in the Gaza Strip\u201d and \u201cthe establishment of an alternative civil administration that is neither <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/hamas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamas<\/a> nor the Palestinian Authority\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Israel Defence Forces \u201cwill prepare for taking control of Gaza City while distributing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population outside the combat zones\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/b58957ceb9664ce9c926b1a57dd5681fY29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzU0NzgwNjI5-2.81212694.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Foreign secretary David Lammy and US vice president JD Vance\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Foreign secretary David Lammy and US vice president JD Vance<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir has pledged to recognise a Palestinian state in September unless the Israeli government meets a series of conditions towards ending the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>These include taking \u201csubstantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza\u201d, \u201cagreeing to a ceasefire, and making clear there will be no annexations in the West Bank\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking while on holiday in the UK and staying at Foreign Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/david-lammy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Lammy<\/a>\u2019s grace-and-favour retreat in Kent, Mr Vance said the UK \u201cis going to make its decision\u201d on Palestinian recognition, but warned: \u201cWe have no plans to recognise a Palestinian state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what it would mean to really recognise a Palestinian state given the lack of functional government there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Vance added on Friday: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of common objectives here.
