Should it thank Donald Trump?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Europe is basking in summer, with sunny skies, high temperatures \u2013 and a surge in Chinese tourists.<\/p>\n<p>Despite lingering challenges such as visa requirements and reduced airline capacity due to <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/ukraine-war?module=hamburger_menu&amp;pgtype=article?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine,<\/a> the continent\u2019s tourism industry is hopeful that 2025 could mark the highest number of Chinese visitors since the Covid-19 pandemic<strong data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component-3\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa17\">.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cWe\u2019re pretty optimistic. I work at the centre of Brussels and we see a lot of Chinese. I hear Mandarin everywhere,\u201d said Ludivine Destr\u00e9e, senior marketing manager at the European Travel Commission (ETC).<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Europe as a whole, including Switzerland, recorded a 13 per cent year-on-year increase in Chinese tourists during the first half of 2025, according to Destr\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">This momentum is only expected to continue. A recent report by the ETC found that 72 per cent of Chinese tourists expressed a willingness to travel long-haul to the continent. That was well above the global average of 39 per cent, and higher than the US and Japan \u2013 two traditionally strong markets \u2013 at 33 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The unusually low interest from Japanese tourists may be linked to the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/lifestyle-culture\/article\/3299940\/japan-has-one-worlds-best-passports-few-go-abroad-amid-weak-yen-safety-concerns?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">weakening yen<\/a>, while Chinese enthusiasm is driven by a mix of factors \u2013 including an economic rebound and a renewed appetite for long-distance travel, according to the report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Europe is basking in summer, with sunny skies, high temperatures \u2013 and a surge in Chinese tourists.
