The British No. 1 faces Olga Danilovic in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters today.

Danilovic has enjoyed an incredible climb and reached a major milestone for the first time earlier this summer. A three-hour battle against Donna Vekic ended in a remarkable comeback and landed the Serbian a place in the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. The achievement was made all the more incredible after Danilovic had been bageled in the first set. She went on to win 0-6 7-5 7-6(8) in the thrilling third-round encounter, having started the tournament as a qualifier and ranked world No. 125.

After sealing match point, Danilovic was visibly emotional and started crying during her on-court interview. The tears continued to flow as she spoke.

The 24-year-old said: “I don’t know what to say. I have no words. Thank you everyone for supporting me here in this match. I’m enjoying my time here so much. I don’t even know how I won this match. I was coming back and down so many times.

“I’m so happy. I just want to say thank you everyone for being here. It’s been so many rain delays. Not good weather. You’re really a tennis country. I don’t know what to say.”

Speaking later in her press conference, Danilovic confirmed they were happy tears after battling through a gruelling encounter. She said: “I mean, those are tears of relief and happiness. I mean, we played for three hours and eight minutes.

“Sit in one place for three hours and eight minutes and you’re going to be bored. Your heart is going to get, like, up, because being in that level of stress for three hours and eight minutes, I don’t know if it’s healthy, I mean, at the end of the day.”

Danilovic, who is now ranked 43rd in the world, will face Raducanu in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters after beating fellow Briton Katie Boulter. She defeated the 28-year-old 6-0 7-5 to set up a meeting with the world No. 39.

Raducanu has also enjoyed a positive year and she is now working with Francis Roig, Rafa Nadal’s former coach.
