{"id":330852,"date":"2025-08-09T15:24:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T15:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/330852\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T15:24:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T15:24:09","slug":"wild-pigs-in-california-are-turning-neon-blue-on-the-inside-officials-warn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/330852\/","title":{"rendered":"Wild Pigs in California Are Turning Neon Blue on the Inside, Officials Warn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unexpected exposure to rodenticide is turning California\u2019s wild pigs blue, state authorities say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not talking about a little blue,\u201d Dan Burton, owner of a wildlife control company in Salinas, California, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-08-05\/exposure-to-rat-poison-turns-meat-of-wild-pigs-blue-authorities-in-monterey-county-warn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Los Angeles Times<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m talking about neon blue, blueberry blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burton was one of the first trappers to discover that local wild pigs had turned blue on the inside. A <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.ca.gov\/News\/Archive\/poison-detection-in-wild-pigs-brings-attention-to-pesticide-exposure-in-hunter-harvested-wildlife#:~:text=CDFW%27s%20WHL%20investigated%2C%20finding%20the,animals%20that%20have%20ingested%20rodenticides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subsequent investigation<\/a> by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) found that the pigs had consumed the anticoagulant <a href=\"https:\/\/npic.orst.edu\/factsheets\/rodenticides.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rodenticide<\/a> diphacinone, a poison used by farmers to control populations of unwanted rats, mice, squirrels, and other small animals. These substances often contain dye to identify them as poison, the CDFW reported, which likely explains how the pigs ended up with blue-colored muscle and fat.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2000639639\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Diphacinone-bait-rodenticide-california.jpg\" alt=\"Diphacinone Bait Rodenticide California\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1379\"  \/>Pesticide baits containing rodenticide are often dyed blue to identify them as poison. Credit: California Department of Fish and Wildlife <\/p>\n<p>Burton\u2019s own investigations found that the poisoned pigs seemed to be frequenting squirrel bait stations, which local farmers were using to control the squirrel populations targeting their crops. However, since the poisoned bait had tiny doses of diphacinone, the pigs, despite turning blue, weren\u2019t outwardly acting sick.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eating animals poisoned by this rodenticide could result in secondary exposure to the poison, the CDFW said. As such, the agency is warning hunters to not consume any wild animals with signs of blue contamination and to report any sightings of such animals to officials. Overall, the agency advised hunters to exercise extra caution around areas with rat control programs, as it is also possible that exposed animals may not necessarily be blue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHunters should be aware that the meat of game animals, such as wild pig, deer, bear and geese, might be contaminated if that game animal has been exposed to rodenticides,\u201d said Ryan Bourbor, pesticide investigations coordinator at CDFW, in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time that officials have identified wild pigs poisoned by rat poison. In 2018, a <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.unl.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=3528&amp;context=icwdm_usdanwrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by the CDFW found traces of rodenticide in about 8.3% of wild pigs spotted lurking around agricultural or residential areas with rat control programs.
