08\/09\/2025August 9, 2025Germany’s partial arms exports ban to Israel met with conservative backlash<\/p>\n

Chancellor\u00a0Friedrich Merz’s\u00a0decision to halt German weapons exports to Israel\u00a0for use in the Gaza Strip “until further notice” has been met with fierce opposition from some members of his\u00a0own conservative\u00a0Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and\u00a0its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU).<\/p>\n

The CSU parliamentary group leader in the Bundestag, Alexander Hoffmann, on Saturday told Germany’s biggest tabloid\u00a0newspaper\u00a0Bild\u00a0that his party\u00a0“was not involved in this decision, and we consider it questionable.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“This would be a departure from decades of foreign policy continuity toward Israel and, as such, requires at least some explanation. We will hold internal discussions on this within the coalition,” Hoffmann added.<\/p>\n

Some conservatives are criticizing Merz for going against\u00a0Germany’s “Staatsr\u00e4son” (reason of state)<\/a>. Given the history of the Holocaust<\/a>, the German state sees a special responsibility for Israel.<\/p>\n

CDU security policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter also sharply criticized the decision as a “serious political and strategic mistake by Germany.”<\/p>\n

Foreign policy experts from the\u00a0CDU\/CSU parliamentary group\u00a0are meeting via videoconference on Sunday to discuss the issue.<\/p>\n

But others\u00a0from the CDU\/CSU alliance have welcomed the decision, including\u00a0CDU foreign policy expert Norbert R\u00f6ttgen.<\/p>\n

“This reaction is correct and, unfortunately, has become inevitable due to the recent decisions of the Israeli government,” R\u00f6ttgen told the regional newspaper Rheinische Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Merz has also received support from his\u00a0junior coalition partner.<\/p>\n
