Paul Getty Museum<\/a> has acquired a painting by Luis de Morales (1505-86)\u2014the Spanish Renaissance artist referred to by some early sources as \u201cEl Divino\u201d\u2014that recently underwent extensive conservation at the Getty. The painting, Christ Carrying the Cross (around 1565), will go on view at the Los Angeles museum on 1 May. It depicts a visibly pained figure of Christ in a pale red robe against a black backdrop, tears running from his eyes and blood dripping down his brow from where the crown of thorns once sat, as his hands grip a massive wooden crucifix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cLuis de Morales\u2019s devotional paintings were perfect vehicles for meditation due to their morbid sensibility and exquisite artistry,\u201d Timothy Potts, the Getty Museum\u2019s director, said in a statement. \u201cThis expressive scene conveys the religious sensibility of the artist\u2019s patrons and the role that painting played in its time as a powerful visual aid to prayer and personal devotion inspired by the great Spanish mystics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">When it arrived at the Getty, the painting suffered from varnish clouding its imagery and colours, alterations to some of the composition\u2019s details and, most challengingly, an 18th century enlargement whereby wooden strips were nailed to the painting\u2019s edge and the image\u2019s borders were expanded upon. Kari Rayner, an associate conservator at the museum, used solvents to remove the newer paints from Morales\u2019s original image. Photo courtesy of Getty Museum<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">&#8220;In addition to painting over the original, the previous expansion took some liberties with the image, extending Christ\u2019s cross and changing the folds of his robe.\u201d Rayner said in a statement. \u201cRemoving the non-original paint was a lengthy and challenging process, but it has brought the painting closer to how the artist originally intended the artwork to appear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The painting, before its restoration and at the time attributed to Morales\u2019s studio, was offered for sale at the German auction house <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.auction.de\/en\/top-results-from-recent-sales\/top-results-old-master-paintings-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nagel Auktionen<\/a> in July 2021 with an estimate of \u20ac10,000 ($11,826). Evidently, bidders had the sense that its attribution might be upgraded, and the work ultimately sold for \u20ac1.18m ($1.39m)\u2014not so far off from the auction record for Morales\u2019s work, set by his <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/auctions\/ecatalogue\/2010\/old-master-british-paintings-evening-sale-l10036\/lot.3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Virgin and Child, or La Virg\u00e9n del Sombrero<\/a>, which sold for \u00a31.6m (more than four times its high estimate) at a Sotheby\u2019s Old Masters auction in 2010. A spokesperson for the Getty confirms that the institution acquired Christ Carrying the Cross via a subsequent private sale, for an undisclosed price, from the London-based <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/keywords\/daniel-katz-gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Katz Gallery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cFully autographed works by Luis de Morales rarely appear on the market,\u201d Davide Gasparotto, the Getty Museum\u2019s senior curator of paintings, noted in a statement. \u201cThis sublimely expressive painting represents a great opportunity to enrich our collection with a compelling work by one of the defining protagonists of 16th-century Spanish art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The Morales work joins the Getty\u2019s collection of Spanish paintings by his contemporary El Greco, as well as pieces by Bartolom\u00e9 Esteban Murillo, Francisco Goya, Juan de Vald\u00e9s Leal and others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The J.
