{"id":331617,"date":"2025-08-09T22:28:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T22:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/331617\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T22:28:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T22:28:11","slug":"russia-belarus-attempting-to-institute-renewed-eu-migrant-crisis-with-help-from-libyan-warlord-telegraph-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/331617\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia, Belarus attempting to institute renewed EU migrant crisis with help from Libyan warlord, Telegraph reports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko appear to have renewed their efforts to institute a migrant crisis within the EU with the assistance of Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar, the Telegraph reported on Aug. 9.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission officials who spoke to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2025\/08\/09\/russia-putin-warlord-khalifa-haftar-libya-migrants-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2025\/08\/09\/russia-putin-warlord-khalifa-haftar-libya-migrants-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Telegra<\/a>ph claim to have tracked an increased number of flights between the Libyan capital, Benghazi, and the Belarusian capital, Minsk.<\/p>\n<p>Officials speculate that the increased number of arrivals into Minsk may serve as a coordinated undertaking between Belarus and Russia to institute a renewed migrant crisis in the EU, with potentially increased levels of asylum seekers attempting to cross into Europe with the aim of destabilizing the EU.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The frequency and nature of these flights, particularly within a short timeframe, raise questions about potential coordination or facilitation of irregular migration flows,&#8221; the official told the news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Putin and Lukashenko instituted the tactic in the summer of 2021, ahead of Russia&#8217;s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with tens of thousands of asylum seekers attempting to cross into Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia with the assistance of Belarusian authorities. <\/p>\n<p>Multiple EU countries instituted state of emergencies amid an attempt to block the large influx of attempted crossings. <\/p>\n<p>Analysts have since assessed that the influx of migrants served as a distraction for European allies as Russia amassed its troops along Ukraine&#8217;s eastern border in preparation for its full-scale invasion.<\/p>\n<p>The recent developments come as Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to begin <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/exclusive-putin-to-demand-ukraine-cede-new-territory-in-alaska-peace-plan-us-likely-to-agree-kyiv-to-reject\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>face-to-face negotiations<\/strong><\/a> with U.S. President Donald Trump on Aug. 15 in Alaska, as Moscow demands that Kyiv cede its eastern territories in exchange for a ceasefire. European allies have <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/ukraine-europe-reject-putins-ceasefire-proposal-present-counterproposal-to-us-ahead-of-trump-putin-meeting-wsj-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>rejected<\/strong><\/a> the proposal, demanding that they, along with Ukraine, <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/future-of-ukraine-cannot-be-decided-without-ukrainians-eu-leaders-react-to-russias-ceasefire-proposal-ahead-of-trump-putin-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>directly participate<\/strong><\/a> in peace talks.<\/p>\n<p>Neighboring EU countries to both Russia and Belarus have taken action to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/poland-belarus-border-crossings-to-remain-closed-polish-official-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fortify<\/a> <\/strong>their borders following the start of Russia&#8217;s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with multiple countries in recent months <a href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/finland-votes-to-withdraw-from-landmine-treaty-citing-russian-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>withdrawing<\/strong><\/a> from the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel landmines. <\/p>\n<p>Libya&#8217;s Haftar serves as the de facto leader of eastern Libya.
