{"id":332415,"date":"2025-08-10T06:01:30","date_gmt":"2025-08-10T06:01:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/332415\/"},"modified":"2025-08-10T06:01:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T06:01:30","slug":"how-many-healthy-life-years-can-eu-citizens-expect-news-articles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/332415\/","title":{"rendered":"How many healthy life years can EU citizens expect? &#8211; News articles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">In 2023, the number of <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Healthy_life_years_(HLY)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy life years<\/a> at birth in the <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:European_Union_(EU)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a> was 63.1 years on average, 63.3 years for women and 62.8 years for men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\"><a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Life_expectancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Life expectancy<\/a> at birth for women in the EU was, on average, 5.3 years longer than that for men (84.0 years compared with 78.7 years). Healthy life years &#8211; free from activity limitations &#8211; represent 75% and 80% of the total life expectancy for women and men, respectively. Therefore, on average, men tend to spend a greater proportion of their shorter lives free from activity limitations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2737c385-4bba-ce03-3e46-409e50768642\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Healthy life years at birth by sex, 2023. Bar chart - Click below to see full dataset.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2737c385-4bba-ce03-3e46-409e50768642\" style=\"margin: 0px;\" width=\"700\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph ecl-u-type-align-center\">Source dataset: <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/databrowser\/view\/hlth_hlye__custom_17573141\/default\/table\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hlth_hlye<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">At country level, there were only 9 EU countries where men registered more healthy life years than women.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">The highest numbers of healthy life years for men were recorded in Malta (71.7 years), followed by Italy (68.5 years) and Sweden (67.2 years), while the lowest ones were found in Latvia (51.2 years), Estonia (56.5 years) and Slovakia (56.8 years).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">Malta also recorded the highest number of healthy life years at birth in 2023 for women (71.1 years), ahead of Bulgaria (71.0 years) and Italy (69.6 years).
