As chief executive of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/britain\/2025\/08\/03\/astrazenecas-falling-out-with-britain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AstraZeneca<\/a>, a drugmaking powerhouse, he has sacrificed immediate returns to shareholders\u2014buybacks ceased entirely between 2013 and 2021\u2014to plough cash back into new discoveries. The company has invested more than \u00a31bn ($1.3bn) in its headquarters in Cambridge, England, strengthening its ties to world-class scientists and creating Europe\u2019s biggest life-sciences hub. His faith has paid off handsomely.
