Three other people brought to the hospital were also targeted near the aid distribution point (on Salah al-Din street) and are being treated for injuries, according to Wafa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One person was killed and several others waiting for aid were injured in the <strong>al-Shakoush area<\/strong>, northwest of the southern city of <strong>Rafah<\/strong>, Wafa reported. We have not yet been able to independently verify this information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Tens of thousands protest in Israel over plan to escalate war on Gaza \u2013 latest updates&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/aug\/10\/israel-gaza-war-protests-aid-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-689866598f08c69345b78a3e#block-689866598f08c69345b78a3e\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Israel has been widely accused of using food as a political weapon and of flagrantly breaking international law by collectively punishing the civilian population of Gaza by its aid blockade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Aid organisations were bringing somewhere between 500 and 600 trucks a day into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a> during the ceasefire earlier this year, but now Israeli restrictions mean much less aid is being allowed into the territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Guardian\u2019s chief Middle East correspondent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/emma-graham-harrison\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emma Graham-Harrison<\/a>, has broken down in great detail how Israel has deliberately caused a famine in Gaza. Here is an extract from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jul\/31\/the-mathematics-of-starvation-how-israel-caused-a-famine-in-gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her piece<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-154zxly\">\n<p>The mathematics of famine are simple in Gaza. Palestinians cannot leave, war has ended farming and Israel has banned fishing, so practically every calorie its population eats must be brought in from outside.<\/p>\n<p>Israel knows how much food is needed. It has been calibrating hunger in Gaza for decades, initially calculating shipments to exert pressure while avoiding starvation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is to put the Palestinians on a diet, but not to make them die of hunger,\u201d a senior adviser to the then prime minister, Ehud Olmert, said in 2006\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Data compiled and published by Israel\u2019s own government makes clear that it has been starving Gaza. Between March and June, Israel allowed just 56,000 tonnes of food to enter the territory, Cogat records show, less than a quarter of Gaza\u2019s minimum needs for that period.<\/p>\n<p>Even if every bag of UN flour had been collected and handed out, and the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation had developed safe systems for equitable distribution, starvation was inevitable. Palestinians did not have enough to eat.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Tens of thousands protest in Israel over plan to escalate war on Gaza \u2013 latest updates&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/aug\/10\/israel-gaza-war-protests-aid-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-689865418f08bfc62530d638#block-689865418f08bfc62530d638\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Israel imposed a total aid blockade for 11 weeks starting in March (ostensibly to put pressure on Hamas to release hostages), and the trickle of food, fuel and medical supplies allowed in since May has not relieved extreme hunger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Aid groups have said Israel\u2019s blockade of humanitarian aid into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a> Strip is the principal cause of the starvation crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When Israel allowed aid back in, it did so mostly under a contentious new aid delivery system \u2013 run by the Israeli-backed logistics group the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a> Humanitarian Foundation. Photograph: Anadolu\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Responding to a global outcry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jul\/23\/we-faced-hunger-before-but-never-like-this-skeletal-children-fill-hospital-wards-as-starvation-grips-gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provoked by images of widespread starvation and malnutrition in Gaza<\/a>, along with the regular killings of aid seekers by Israeli forces, the Israeli military increased the scale of aid allowed into the Strip at the end of last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But the amount of aid Israel allowed in is still totally inadequate for the humanitarian needs of Gaza\u2019s two million population that is now experiencing catastrophic levels of famine, according to aid and human rights organisations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Letting in small numbers of trucks and airdropping supplies (which is costly, dangerous and inefficient) is nowhere near enough to reverse the famine trend.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Tens of thousands protest in Israel over plan to escalate war on Gaza \u2013 latest updates&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/aug\/10\/israel-gaza-war-protests-aid-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-68985e658f08f4cafb5acbd3#block-68985e658f08f4cafb5acbd3\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Updated at\u00a005.27 EDT<\/p>\n<p>At least 100 children in Gaza have died from famine and malnutrition, health ministry says<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Over the past 24 hours, hospitals in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a> Strip recorded five new deaths due to famine and malnutrition, including two children, according to the territory\u2019s health ministry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This brings the total number of Palestinian people who have died from famine and malnutrition to 217, including 100 children.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:?subject=Tens of thousands protest in Israel over plan to escalate war on Gaza \u2013 latest updates&amp;body=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2025\/aug\/10\/israel-gaza-war-protests-aid-latest-news-updates?CMP=share_btn_url&amp;page=with%3Ablock-689859ef8f08f4cafb5acbb5#block-689859ef8f08f4cafb5acbb5\" type=\"button\" class=\"dcr-1mulgdf\">Share<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The request for the UN security council was reportedly endorsed by all members of the security council except Panama, which is its current chair, and the US, Israel\u2019s most powerful ally and biggest arms supplier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The security council is the UN\u2019s most powerful body; it has the authority to issue legally binding resolutions that can be backed up by sanctions and peacekeepers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There are five permanent members of the council (China, the Russian Federation, France, the UK and the US). The full cabinet is expected to give its approval as soon as Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The Palestinian Authority on Saturday lambasted the Israeli government\u2019s decision to expand its assault<\/strong> in Gaza, as it called on the international community to push for the entry of aid into the strip. According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, the PA\u2019s presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh said the Israeli government\u2019s moves were \u201can unprecedented challenge and provocation to the international will to achieve peace and stability\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Several Arab and Muslim countries on Saturday condemned as a \u201cdangerous escalation\u201d Israel\u2019s plan to take control of Gaza City.<\/strong> About 20 countries, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, said the plan constituted \u201ca flagrant violation of international law, and an attempt to entrench the illegal occupation and impose a fait accompli&#8230; in contravention of international legitimacy\u201d. <strong>Muslim nations must work in total unison and work to mobilise the international community against Israel\u2019s plan<\/strong> to take control of Gaza City, Turkish foreign minister Hakan Fidan said on Saturday after talks in Egypt. Speaking at a joint press conference in El Alamein with his Egyptian counterpart after meeting Egypt\u2019s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Fidan also said the Organisation of Islamic cooperation had been called to an emergency meeting.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>More than 450 people were arrested in central London on Saturday at the largest demonstration relating to Palestine Action since the group was proscribed as a terrorist organisation<\/strong>. On Saturday night, police said that as of 9pm, 466 people had been arrested for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/aug\/09\/palestine-action-arrests-london-largest-protest-ban\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showing support for Palestine Action<\/a>. There were a further eight arrests for other offences including five assaults on officers. Police said the total of 474 was the most arrests it had made related to a single operation in at least the past decade.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>The UK announced another \u00a38.5m for UN aid to Gaza after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/israel\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel<\/a> unveiled plans to expand its military operations<\/strong> in the territory.
