{"id":332897,"date":"2025-08-10T10:32:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-10T10:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/332897\/"},"modified":"2025-08-10T10:32:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-10T10:32:15","slug":"europe-stresses-need-to-protect-ukrainian-interests-ahead-of-trump-putin-talks-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/332897\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe stresses need to protect Ukrainian interests ahead of Trump-Putin talks \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Ukraine\u2019s president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelensky\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelensky\/\">Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/a> said on Sunday that Kyiv \u201cvalues and fully supports\u201d a joint statement by European leaders on achieving peace in Ukraine while protecting Ukrainian and European interests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">European leaders on Saturday welcomed US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s plans to meet Russian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> on ending the war in Ukraine, while stressing the need to keep pressure on Moscow and protect Ukrainian and European security interests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cWe share the conviction that a diplomatic solution must protect Ukraine\u2019s and Europe\u2019s vital security interests,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cWe agree that these vital interests include the need for robust and credible security guarantees that enable Ukraine to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,\u201d the statement said, adding: \u201cThe path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">The leaders said \u201cthey remain committed to the principle that international borders must not be changed by force\u201d, and added: \u201cThe current line of contact should be the starting point of negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">They said negotiations could only take place in the context of a ceasefire or reduction of hostilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">On X, Mr Zelenskiy wrote that \u201cThe end of the war must be fair, and I am grateful to everyone who stands with Ukraine and our people today for the sake of peace in Ukraine, which is defending the vital security interests of our European nations.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cUkraine values and fully supports the statement by President Macron, Prime Minister Meloni, Chancellor Merz, Prime Minister Tusk, Prime Minister Starmer, President Ursula von der Leyen, and President Stubb on peace for Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr Trump plans to meet  Mr Putin in Alaska on Friday. He has talked up the prospect of a deal that could resolve the three-and-a-half-year-old conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr Zelenskiy and his European allies have warned that any deal requiring Ukraine to surrender significant parts of its territory would only encourage Russian aggression. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/people\/2025\/06\/07\/i-had-hoped-my-service-and-sacrifices-would-be-enough-but-they-havent-ukrainian-commanders-final-dispatch\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ukrainian commander\u2019s final dispatch: \u2018I had hoped my service and sacrifices would be enough, but they haven\u2019t\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">On Sunday, one person was killed and several apartments and an industrial facility were damaged in a Ukrainian drone attack on the south Russian region of Saratov, the local governor said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Roman Busargin posted on the Telegram messaging app that residents were evacuated after debris from a destroyed drone damaged three apartments in the overnight attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">\u201cSeveral residents required medical assistance,\u201d Mr Busargin said. \u201cAid was provided onsite, and one person has been hospitalised. Unfortunately, one person has died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Russian air defence units destroyed 121 Ukrainian drones overnight, including eight over the Saratov region, the defence ministry said. It reports only how many drones its defence units down, not how many Ukraine launches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Mr Busargin did not specify what kind of industrial site was damaged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Social media footage showed thick black smoke rising over what looked like an industrial zone. Reuters verified the location seen in one of the videos as matching file and satellite imagery of the area. Reuters could not verify when the video was filmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Ukrainian media, including the RBK-Ukraine media outlet, reported that the oil refinery in the city of Saratov, the administrative centre of the region, was on fire after a drone attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph  \">Reuters could not verify those reports.
