Pictured with mum, Rebecca, 36Credit: Robert O\u2019Halloran<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Toddler sitting in a shopping cart.\" height=\"960\" width=\"720\" data-credit=\"Robert O\u2019Halloran\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/robert-o-halloran-pictured-daughters-987972478.jpg\" data-caption=\"Fiadh, three, was the first to fall sick in March last year\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/robert-o-halloran-pictured-daughters-987972478.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>7<\/p>\n<p>Fiadh, three, was the first to fall sick in March last yearCredit: Robert O\u2019Halloran<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Robert O\u2019Halloran pictured with his daughters, Fiadh and Nuala.\" height=\"960\" width=\"810\" data-credit=\"Robert O\u2019Halloran\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/robert-o-halloran-pictured-daughters-987972557.jpg\" data-caption=\"Then two years old, Fiadh was rushed to hospital after collapsing while eating a banana\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/robert-o-halloran-pictured-daughters-987972557.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>7<\/p>\n<p>Then two years old, Fiadh was rushed to hospital after collapsing while eating a bananaCredit: Robert O\u2019Halloran<\/p>\n<p>Fiadh was two years old when she fell sick with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/32064152\/types-of-cough-remedies-treatment-when-see-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a bad cough<\/a> in March last year and parents Robert, 37, and Rebecca, 36, from Ipswich, had already been concerned.<\/p>\n<p>Robert recalled: \u201cShe was diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/20840331\/bronchiolitis-symptoms-watch-out-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bronchiolitis<\/a>, and we were going back and forth to hospital for a week, as she was coughing so much and had lost her appetite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey gave us a reliever inhaler to help with her breathing, but by the end of the week, she was so bad, Rebecca and I decided to take her back to hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was just getting her ready at around 8.30am when I gave her a piece of banana as she hadn\u2019t eaten.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThen suddenly, her temples turned grey, and her eyes began rolling back. <\/p>\n<p>Read more on childhood illness<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nuala was only a week old, and Rebecca was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/breastfeeding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breast-feeding<\/a> her when I shouted out that Fiadh had stopped breathing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When Fiadh fell unconscious, Robert was overcome with panic. He scooped her up and ran out of the house, screaming for help and begging her to breathe.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Rebecca immediately dialled 999.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbours and passers-by ran over to Robert and a man <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/driving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">driving<\/a> by stopped and got out of his car to help.<\/p>\n<p>Just as Rebecca began administering CPR, guided by a paramedic on the phone, the ambulance arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one of the scariest moments of our lives,\u201d Robert said.<\/p>\n<p>What is RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) or bronchiolitis?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe paramedics put Fiadh on oxygen straight away and told us she was very, very sick and had to get to hospital straight away.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A team of doctors and nurses were waiting at hospital and swept Fiadh straight into intensive care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey couldn\u2019t work out what was wrong with her at first,&#8221; Robert recalled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Then a specialist team was brought in and one of the doctors said the piece of banana might have gone down the wrong hole because Fiadh had been struggling to breathe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Toddler looking at chickens through a wire fence.\" height=\"960\" width=\"720\" data-credit=\"Robert O\u2019Halloran\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/robert-o-halloran-pictured-daughters-987972555.jpg\" data-caption=\"Fiadh had been diagnosed with bronchiolitis which had developed into pneumonia\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/robert-o-halloran-pictured-daughters-987972555.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>7<\/p>\n<p>Fiadh had been diagnosed with bronchiolitis which had developed into pneumoniaCredit: Robert O\u2019Halloran<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Robert O\u2019Halloran with his daughters, Fiadh and Nuala.\" height=\"926\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Robert O\u2019Halloran\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/robert-o-halloran-pictured-daughters-987972479.jpg\" data-caption=\"Doctors said her lungs were weakened, which is why she stopped breathing when she choked\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/robert-o-halloran-pictured-daughters-987972479.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>7<\/p>\n<p>Doctors said her lungs were weakened, which is why she stopped breathing when she chokedCredit: Robert O\u2019Halloran<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey discovered she had an infection which was affecting her lung capacity and making it hard for her to breathe and that\u2019s probably why, when I\u2019d given her the banana, it had gone down the wrong way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, it was a combination of her lungs being too weak because of the infection and the banana going down the wrong way which had caused her to stop breathing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"article__quote\">\n<p>Just like with Fiadh she had a bad cough, and I thought, \u2018Oh no, here we go again&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Robert O&#8217;Halloran<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Doctors said Fiadh would need to undergo lifesaving surgery to remove the banana from her airway. <\/p>\n<p>But because her lungs were so weak, the operation was high risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was such a mess I couldn\u2019t even talk,\u201d Robert said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t fathom losing Fiadh. The operation only took an hour, but it was the longest hour of my life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rebecca had had to stay home with Nuala and when I called her to give her the good news, we both broke down in tears.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the surgery went well and after a week in intensive care, Faidh began to recover from her pneumonia with antibiotic treatment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing she asked for when she came round was some banana \u2013 I couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d Robert said.<\/p>\n<p>What is bronchiolitis? <\/p>\n<p><strong>Bronchiolitis is a common chest infection that affects babies and children under two. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s usually mild and can be treated at home, but it can be serious.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The early symptoms of bronchiolitis are similar to a cold, such as sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, a cough and a slightly high temperature of 38C.<\/p>\n<p>A child with bronchiolitis may then get other symptoms, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breathing more quickly<\/li>\n<li>Finding it difficult to feed or eat<\/li>\n<li>Noisy breathing (wheezing)<\/li>\n<li>Becoming irritable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Symptoms are usually worst between days three and five, and the cough usually gets better in three weeks. <\/p>\n<p>You should ask for an urgent GP appointment of call 111 if: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your child has had a cold and it&#8217;s getting worse<\/li>\n<li>Your child is feeding or eating much less than normal<\/li>\n<li>Your child has had a dry nappy for 12 hours or more, or shows other\u00a0signs of dehydration<\/li>\n<li>Your baby is under three months and has a temperature of 38C, or is older than thee months and has a temperature of 39C or higher<\/li>\n<li>Your baby feels hotter than usual when you touch their back or chest, or feels sweaty<\/li>\n<li>Your child is very tired or irritable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some children may have a higher risk of getting seriously ill with bronchiolitis because they were born prematurely, have a heart or lung condition or have a weakened immune system. <\/p>\n<p>Bronchiolitis is caused by a viral infection, usually respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).<\/p>\n<p>RSV is very common and spreads easily in coughs and sneezes. Almost all children get it at least once before they&#8217;re two years old.<\/p>\n<p>The RSV vaccine helps reduce their risk. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s available on the NHS from 28 weeks of pregnancy. This will help protect your baby for the first few months after they&#8217;re born.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also offered to adults aged 75 to 79.<\/p>\n<p>Source: NHS <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI half laughed, and half cried.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Doctors thought the tot might have asthma, but she was too young for a proper diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Once she was well enough, she was sent home with a preventer inhaler to be used daily in case she got breathless.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Horrific&#8217; second ordeal <\/p>\n<p>Sat by little Fiadh\u2019s hospital bedside willing her to pull through, Robert thought he\u2019d never experience something so awful ever again.<\/p>\n<p>But in January, less than a year after the harrowing ordeal, their youngest daughter Nuala was also struck down with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/32016052\/cold-rsv-flu-covid-norovirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">respiratory virus<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust like with Fiadh she had a bad cough, and I thought, \u2018Oh no, here we go again&#8217;,&#8221; also with a cough &#8211; less than a year after her sisterCredit: Robert O\u2019Halloran<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Baby girl sitting on the floor wearing a pink polka dot swimsuit.\" height=\"960\" width=\"727\" data-credit=\"Robert O\u2019Halloran\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/e9cdca48-dbe6-4932-8c9d-332c0cf73d3c.jpg\" data-caption=\"She was also taken to hospital and was in intensive care for a week\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/e9cdca48-dbe6-4932-8c9d-332c0cf73d3c.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>7<\/p>\n<p>She was also taken to hospital and was in intensive care for a weekCredit: Robert O\u2019Halloran<\/p>\n<p>But Nuala\u2019s condition deteriorated and she was rushed to hospital on February 12, after wheezing and struggling to breathe during a family trip to Billericay.<\/p>\n<p>Robert said: \u201cShe was put on a life support machine, and it was horrific seeing our tiny little girl covered in tubes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rebecca and I just couldn\u2019t believe we were having to go through the same thing again.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Nuala began to recover after only week in intensive care. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain, it seems like she\u2019d picked up a respiratory infection and her lungs just hadn\u2019t been able to cope,\u201d Robert said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t really know why because the girls are still so young, but it made me realise just how important lungs are and how serious things like this can get.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never thought anything could be as bad as Fiadh being rushed to hospital and not knowing if she would be okay, but then when Nuala also fell ill too, I couldn\u2019t believe it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When they get a chest infection it hits them hard.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After seeing Fiadh battle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/34209182\/signs-pneumonia-mistake-for-cold-val-kilmer-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pneumonia<\/a>, Robert decided to raise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">money<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asthmaandlung.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">Asthma + Lung UK<\/a> to help raise awareness of how serious lung conditions can be and signed up to run the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a> Marathon on April 27.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am running it for both of them now since Nuala was also hospitalised, &#8221;
