Federer set to play celebrity doubles match at big ATP event this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Roger Federer played his last professional match at the Laver Cup in 2022, finishing his incredible career with a total of 103 ATP titles. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Swiss legend has spent time away from tennis since retiring, but still remains involved with the sport, and recently attended this year\u2019s Wimbledon championships. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/roger-federer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federer<\/a> was also present at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/many-tennis-fans-are-in-agreement-over-what-the-french-open-should-do-next-to-honour-rafael-nadal-after-his-ceremony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rafael Nadal\u2019s Roland Garros tribute ceremony<\/a> earlier this season to celebrate the Spanish legend\u2019s dominance at the French Open, making a surprise appearance alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/novak-djokovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Novak Djokovic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/andy-murray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Murray<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Now, however, fans will be able to see him in action, as he is set to step back on court at an upcoming event. <\/p>\n<p><img X, formerly known as Twitter, that Federer will be returning to the Shanghai Masters to play in a celebrity doubles match. <\/p>\n<p>The 20-time major champion said: \u201cHello, this is Roger, and I am really happy to be returning to Qizhong Stadium in Shanghai for the Rolex Shanghai Masters. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShanghai has always been a special place for me, with great fans, unforgettable memories, and a real love for the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tournament, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATP<\/a> Masters 1000 event, is set to begin on the first of October. <\/p>\n<p>Roger Federer\u2019s record at the Shanghai Masters <\/p>\n<p>Federer found plenty of success at the Shanghai Masters over the years, having made several deep runs at the tournament, while winning it twice. <\/p>\n<p>After the event relocated to the Chinese city in 2009, he made the final there in 2010, but lost to Murray, and reached the semifinals in 2012. <\/p>\n<p>Then in 2014, Federer won the title after beating Gilles Simon in the championship match, clinching two tiebreaks to emerge victorious in straight sets. <\/p>\n<p>In 2017, he hoisted the trophy for a final time, coming out on top in his bout with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/rafael-nadal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nadal<\/a> in the final.
